Finance Friday: Saving as a Couple

Saving money is hard enough on your own, but when you throw another person in the mix, the process gets even more confusing. It’s easy to get stuck in a routine of going out to dinner or drinks several times a week (guilty as charged) but with a few tweaks, you and your partner can start saving money without sacrificing fun.

Stack up those savings

I get it—date night is fun and important and you don’t want to give it up. Nor should you! Date night doesn’t always have to mean dressing up and going out, though. Try something new by trying out a new recipe at home; it’s a fun bonding experience, you get to learn something new, and it’s waaaaay cheaper than any decent restaurant. And sometimes it even ends up being more delicious.

Saving is a lot easier (and more fun) if you set up some clear goals and hold yourself accountable to them. Hang up a chart on the wall that tracks your savings, and give yourselves a small reward every time you hit a milestone. Keep the rewards small, though—remember that you’re trying to save here. Saving can seem like a drag in the moment, but if you chip away at it a bit at a time, your future selves will thank you.
