Overextension & Brit Telly

Don’t stress yourself

In college, there’s so much pressure to always be on. To always take on more homework, more credit hours, more work assignments, participate in clubs and extra-curriculars, apply for more internships and jobs and grad schools. And to go out with friends, catch up on the latest episodes of the shows everyone is watching, and help people out if they ask you. And everyone who has ever been a part of a group project knows what it feels like to basically do the entire thing yourself.

If this sounds like you, it’s good to know you’re not alone… And that there are ways to get out of the cycle of feeling like you never have enough time to do… well, anything.

Know that it’s always okay to ask for help. Even if it seems like the world would come to a halt if you don’t complete the task all by yourself, generally speaking, most professors and bosses, as well as friends and classmates, will be okay with extending deadlines or offering a helping hand if you take the time to ask. If you’re known for having a great work ethic, they’ll know it’s not that you’re slacking off, you’re just over-extended and could use some extra help.

In the same vein, feel free to delegate tasks – especially during group projects. Sometimes, even the most perfectionist project leader needs to settle for less than perfection in order to stay sane and have enough time for the rest of their life. Set limits and stick to them. Don’t let yourself schedule more than you can reasonably handle in any given day or week.

British Telly is on fiiiire

Two biiiiiiiiig events happened in British television news this weekend.

First, the new Doctor Who was announced. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the show, it revolves around a character called The Doctor, who is a Time Lord and is reincarnated every so often in a new form. So far, they’ve had 12 different Doctors, all male. On Sunday, though, the 13th Doctor was announced as Jodie Whittaker, the first woman to take on the iconic role. Fans of the show have had mixed reactions, but I, for one, am SO EXCITED!!!

Second, the first episode of Game of Thrones season seven premiered last night. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the show… well, it’s a cultural phenomenon. It’s based off of George R.R. Martin’s series of the same name and is the most successful and popular television show of all time. The seventh season will be the penultimate season. Strangely, unlike most shows that are based on books, this show has caught up to and moved beyond what’s available in print.

Monday Shower Thoughts

  1. Chuck E. Cheese is really just a casino for children.
  2. There should be an “already bought it” option when getting rid of unnecessary ads.
  3. We don’t give enough credit to whoever first thought to put handles on mugs.
  4. Wallets are pockets with pockets that we put in our pockets.
  5. Why isn’t it “Hay” like how are you instead of “Hey”?
