We’re pleased to announce the winner of our Spring 2017 semester scholarship Lyric Hawkins of KIPP Atlanta Collegiate!
Lyric has spent more than a decade dedicating herself to making her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia a better place, particularly the city’s homeless population and victims of human trafficking.
Lyric’s passion for social service started during her junior year of high school, which she founded KAC Cares. Through community service events hosted by Lyric and her peers, KAC Cares has collected toys, arranged food drives, provided assistance to local shelters, and donated toiletries for the homeless. Lyric credits her time interacting with victims of human trafficking in helping her to realize her passion for social justice.
“Within my organization, KAC Cares, I serve as a knight to survivors of Human Trafficking. I host events such as shelter drives where I promote community inclusiveness within my school to both raise awareness for Human Trafficking while raising needed supplies for the survivors such as prom dresses and toiletries,” said Lyric, “Community service allows me to be that helping hand to women that have survived Human Trafficking, and through community service I promote the core values of kindness and compassion.”
With her sights set on a career in social justice, Lyric already has plans to continue her work after graduating from the Political Science Department at University of Missouri- Columbia.
“Ultimately, I want to create a center that will establish a safe haven for those that are victims of Human Trafficking by providing not only food and shelter but a positive community among the victims. The purpose of the safe haven will be to ensure a comfortable life as they transition back into society once freed from their traffickers,” said Lyric, “It will provide education for all ages of victims living within my organization, counseling that coincides with mentoring programs, self-esteem classes, clothing, survival care and training, job training, and assistance to drug abuse and other unhealthy habits victims have been introduced to and since developed.”
