Samantha Roque 1 Intro to Phenomenology st Phenomenology – study of human consciousness from 1 person (no objectivity) Understand how our brains structure experience “a way of understanding the world & how individual human beings make sense of the world” intentionality – consciousness is always directed AT something, real or imagined EX: Question… What is a seed? Your brain… If you plant it, it will grow into a tree or a fruit. Your brain is thinking of what the seed will become. Oedipus & Jocasta (as an example) 1. Oracle of Apollo tells the King & Jocasta that they’re going to have a son 2. Says the son will kill the father & marry the mother 3. King & Queen abandon Oedipus (son) in the desert 4. Oedipus is raised by someone else & then wanders back into town & meets the King 5. UNBEKNOWNST to the King, Oedipus, & Jocasta Oedipus kills King & marries Jocasta 6. Oedipus was left in the desert & never got to meet his mother or father Our subjective understanding of experience isn’t always consistent w/ what is happening in the extra-mental world Samantha Roque 2 Narratization Narratization – examines how stories shape the ways in which people perceive phenomena Fisher vs. Allison Fisher after experiencing a phenomena we impose a narrative structure on events to make sense of them Allison we make sense by placing events in our own subjective stories; we write the story thinking of what the end will be What happens during Narratization Human consciousness fills in a narrative’s missing blanks EX: Crying baby …are they hungry? …do they need to be changed? Tenets of Narratization Allison says humans are storyLIVERS, not just storytellers o Retention – past experiences shape current perception o Protention – primary expectations shape perception (connects our perceptions of the here-&-now to the future); what we expect will happen Samantha Roque 3 Personal & Digital Narrative Personal Narrative – a story composed by someone who was a participant in the story being told Themes Canterbury Effect: telling your story inspires others to share similar tales o One story begets another o Helps break taboos (EX: Jerry Sandusky, one person came out & explained what happen to them, inspiring others to confess as well) Activism: personal narrative’s aid in the consciousness raising o Make ppl. aware of an issue o EX: Slave & Women’s Right’s Narratives Digital Narratives: Facebook, Podcasts, Tumblr, etc. Computer Mediated Communication – (CMC) blogs, podcasts, social networks o Defies conventional temporal organization of narrative (first beginning, then middle, then end) o EX: Blogs… You can look at things by tab or subject matter, not necessarily chronology Puzzle Piece Metaphor: puzzle pieces include pictures, short status updates, biographical information in “about me” section etc. o Challenges traditional narrative structure b/c gender, sexuality, race, & ethnicity can be manipulated online o In a book, you can have a pretty unified character, what you expect is fairly consistent
