Mary Ainsworth Studied under Bowlby Developed research regarding her concept os f tranger situation Stated healthy attachment is important source of security and support Series of 7 steps, utilizing a child and his or her mother 1. Parent and child in room alone 2. Child explores room without parental participation --> how does child entertain his or her self? 3. Stranger enters room and talks to parent, also attempts to engage with the child 4. Parent quietly leaves the room --> secure attachment: child bolts to the door, or cries 5. Mother returns and comforts child, hoping to return child to baseline. Stranger and mom then both leave 6. Stranger returns and interacts with child --> secure attachment: doesn't bode well with stranger 7. Mom then returns to comfort child Based on results from stranger situation experiment, developed3 types of attachment 1. Secure Attachment a. Explore the room when mom present b. Typically distressed when cg leaves c. Allows being comforted by cg d. Once comforted, will explore again 2. Avoidant-Secure Attachment a. Little exploration of room b. Little response to mom c.
