Ex: {(0,9.1),(10,6.7),(20,10.7),(30,13.2),(36,17.4)} Domain: (Set of all x values) {0, 10, 20, 30, 36} Range: (Set of all y values) {9.1, 6.7, 10.7, 13.2, 17.4} A relation is a function if every first component (x) has only one corresponding second component (y). “Every (x) has only one (y).” No repeated (x) values. Ex: Is the following relation a function? a.) {(-1,2),(3,5),(2,4)} Answer: Yes b.) {(-1,2),(3,2),(2,2)} Answer: Yes c.) {(-1,2),(3,5),(-1,4)} Answer: No Vertical Line Test – If a vertical line would cross the graph more than once, it is NOT a function. Ex: Does the following lines pass the vertical line test? a.) Answer: Yes b.) Answer: No Y is replaced by f(x). Ex: y= 3x+7 f(x)= 3x+7 a.) f(2)= 3(2)+7 Answer: f(2)= 13 b.) f(x+3)= 3(x+3)+7 Answer: f(x+3)= 3x+16 c.) f(-x)= 3(-x)+7 Answer: f(-x)= -3x+7 Domain – Interval of smallest (x) value to largest (x) value of the graph. {Left-to- right}.
