Math1914 Pre-calculus Chapter 1, section 3 When reading a graph, read left to right, and answer with only (x) values. Give intervals in interval notation (when start, when stop) and only use parenthesis. (x) values! Ex: State the intervals on which it is increasing, decreasing, or constant. Increasing: (- Infinity, -1)U(1, + Infinity) Decreasing: (-1,1) Constant: None Two Types of Turning Points – 1.) Minimum (Decreasing to increasing) 2.) Maximum (Increasing to decreasing). A function is EVEN if f(-x) = f(x). All signs stay same as original and all even functions have y axis symmetry. 2 Ex: f(x)= x +4 2 f(-x)=(-x) +4 2 = x +4 =EVEN A function is ODD if f(-x)= -f(x). All signs change from the original and all odd functions are symmetric to the origin. Ex: f(x)= x -x +x f(x)=(-x) -(-x) +(-x) 5 3 =-x +x -x =ODD Symmetry – “The same measure.” Mirror image, same on both sides.
