Beliefs of the Nacirema people  Reside in: Mexico  ● Nacirema culture is characterized by a highly developed market economy   ● A large part of the fruits of their labors and a considerable portion of the day are spent in  ritual activity.    ● ** “The fundamental belief underlying the whole system appears to be that​human  body is ugly and that its natural tendency is to debility and disease. Incarcerated in such  a body, man's only hope is to avert these characteristics through the use of the powerful  influences of ritual and ceremo. Every household has one or more shrines devoted to  this purpose.”  ● Their houses are filled with shrines that have potions that were enchanted by the  medicine men of the village. They contain the ills of the people, and are kept in the  shrine boxes.     Rituals and Practices  ● Below the medicine men in society are the holy­mouth­men, who perform sacred mouth  rituals. If they didn't, the people believe their jaws would shrink, and  their friends and  lovers would reject them.   ● Every couple times a year, the Nacirema people visit the medicine men, who poke, prod,  and gash out their teeth. Holes are filled with magic substances,​aecay” is ridden  from the subject.   ● Some men’s ceremonies involved lacerating their faces with sharp objects. Women bake  their heads in small ovens.  ● Reproduction is limited to certain times, contraception comes from using magical  substances, and pregnancy is hidden. Most women don’t breastfeed.  ● The​lati psis the center temple of the medicine men where extreme healings can  happen, but for a price.   ○ unorthodox treatments include: excreting into a sacred vessel and using that to  determine the sickness’ course, being poked with magical needles, and forcing  the subject to eat magical substances  ○ There is a “listener” who just listens to the subject recount repressed memories  as far back as their birth    Conclusions:    ● The nacirema people are extremely masochistic, and find pleasure/healing from painful  ceremonies that rid the body of decay.   ● Despite the unreliable nature of the healing medicine men can provide, they have  survived for hundreds of yea​ .
