Beliefs of the Nacirema people Reside in: Mexico ● Nacirema culture is characterized by a highly developed market economy ● A large part of the fruits of their labors and a considerable portion of the day are spent in ritual activity. ● ** “The fundamental belief underlying the whole system appears to be thathuman body is ugly and that its natural tendency is to debility and disease. Incarcerated in such a body, man's only hope is to avert these characteristics through the use of the powerful influences of ritual and ceremo. Every household has one or more shrines devoted to this purpose.” ● Their houses are filled with shrines that have potions that were enchanted by the medicine men of the village. They contain the ills of the people, and are kept in the shrine boxes. Rituals and Practices ● Below the medicine men in society are the holymouthmen, who perform sacred mouth rituals. If they didn't, the people believe their jaws would shrink, and their friends and lovers would reject them. ● Every couple times a year, the Nacirema people visit the medicine men, who poke, prod, and gash out their teeth.
