Notes January 28 2015 History 120 Sigmon England established a colony America was quotdiscovered named after St Christopher who helped get across the water Story of itte boy gets heavier and heavier as Chris takes him to the river and the little boy actually turns out to be Jesus Columbus grew up in Genoa Italy place of a lot of trade He basically grew up on ships his entire life and learned a lot about triangular sails Lateen Sails were founded by the North Africans Egyptians North Africans controlled shipping and trade Columbus goal was to get to China instead he found and named it lndia When he was 25 years old he went on a voyage when pirates soon attacked his ship He then found himself in modern day Portugal where he learned science stars latitude magnetic northfounded by Chinese While in Portugal a small boat oated a shore with two Norwegian dead bodies in it but Columbus saw them and thought they looked Chinese After seeing the direction the boat had oated ashore from he decided to sail across the Atlantic Ocean in hopes of nding China 2400 miles was as far as the ship could travel Columbus decided that he was leaving from Canary Islands to coast ofJapan 10600 miles The King and Queen of Spain gave him 3 ships to use In order to recruit men he visited the prisons in Spain When the prisoners didn t want to join he found his men on death row is when they set sail After 33 days they found the Island of Hispanola Returns to Europe where he tries to prove he found Asia He then acquired more ships and soldiers He stops at the Canary Islands to pick up cattle animals fruit and water The men then started getting sick and passing diseases to Native Americans Diseases consisted of the Swine Flu in which was acquired from the pigs he picked up at the Canary Islands In 50 years it went from 250000 people to only 500 people because of the diseases Spanish murdering and people moving Columbus enslaved 500 Indians and sent them to Spain Columbus was considered to have quotopened a door between two worldsquot The came to Hispanola 10 years after Columbus in He sketched out shapes and labeled continents creating quotAmerigo s new world which consisted of North and South America He gured out that it was not India he was in Columbus was a driven guy but he never treated other people nicely He described the native Americans to be quotArtlessquot He thought that the were childlike because they were wearing no clothes since it was hot The Taino Indians were darker and wore paint on their faces as sunscreen Their housing was very clean and spacious They used cones They grew crops on top of the cones such as squash etc Taino Indians danced and sang Their villages consisted of about 1115 families
