Nationalism in the Middle East, II Egypt: Nasser Suez War (1956) – Non-Alignment – Technology – Israel Zionism – A nationalist movement that had the idea of the Jews having their own state, as they did before with Palestine. Balfour Declaration (1917) – He said there should be a Jewish state. Creation – The Jewish population began to increase in Palestine Holocaust – This was a huge factor in the creation of Israel, because it drove many Jews out of Germany. Palestinians – Israel was originally supposed to be split with them. They didn’t like this so they attack the Israeli people, and they show their ability to fight. The Israelis win this fight and end up getting more land than they were going to originally have. West Bank – Some Palestinians still live in Israel, and they are located on the West Bank on the Gaza strip. Gaza – The Wars Egypt (1956) – Six Day War (1967) – Egypt began to mass a large amount of troops along the border of Israel. So Israel launches troops fro their own self preservation o Causes o Territories – Jerusalem, Gaza Strip, Sinai West Bank, Gaza, Sinai Yom Kippur (1973) – Egypt performs a surprise attack against Israel. This caught them off guard and stunned them, so they regrouped and hit Egypt hard. They ended up winning this war too. Peace Process Camp David – Jimmy Carter convinced Egypt and Israeli prime ministers talk. Egypt recognized Israel, and they decided they wouldn’t fight for 3 years. Intifada – Palestinians vs Israeli. Palestinian uprising against Israel. Oslo Accords – Israeli and PLO meet to talk about the Palestinian issue. And the PLO recognizes Israel.
