Melanie LeMay DRACULA NOTES FOR CHAPTERS 19-23 Early in the morning, The Men all go to Carfax in the search for the boxes of earth that have been sent from Transylvania to England by Dracula. They are given crucifixes by Helsing, its always a good idea to have a surplus of them laying around. Only 29 out of the 50 boxes of Earth are present, Where are the other 21? Despite there being missing boxes Helsing seems to be optimistic about their events and journey to Carfex. RATS – there are rats filling the church, the men call in dogs by using whistles to get the rats away, Good thing they have these handy dogs. ^ all in the view of Harker Seward and Helsing talk about Reinfield and how he doesn’t want to communicate with them any longer. So all of the men go looking for the boxes of earth that had been sent by Dracula, they find them, but not ALL of them, which is somewhat concerning, but according to Helsing its an ok thing, hes a optimistic being at the moment. They have to control the situation by having dogs attack the rats that fill the church, kind of nice that they have a pack of dogs handy. Seward and Helsing next talk about how Reinfield and how he is no longer responding to them nor communicating with them. Mina is mad at Harker for not taking her with the men on their adventure to the counts house. She talks about how she was not tired but went to sleep anyways, but while she was attempting to go to sleep she could hear reinfield praying the entire time which was distracting. She wakes up in the asylum that night to reinfields window being open though she is aware that she shut it, shes writes about all that has happened to her in the evening in her journal so that she can tell Harker and the others when they return. She thinks she sees a thin streak of white mist coming from the window that night. Harker begins investigating the missing boxes of earth, 21 are missing and he must find them. 12 have been found in London deposited into 2 different houses, leaving 9 left to be found. The other 9 have been located in Picadilly, a London suburb town. The areas are very populated so how will they break into the house? Will they go unnoticed or will they get caught, if they get caught who will catch them? Reinfield still is not cooperating with Seward, sewards claims are beginning to upset him. One night after meeting with seward a scream comes from reinfields area, the attendants find that he is covered in blood, Who did this to him?! Is it similar to the children getting bitten? THE VAMPIRE! Reinfield is now dying, very ill and he admits that the vampire, Count Dracula has been by to visit him many times. He was supplied flies and spiders by the count in the hopes that he could possibly regain his strength and become well again. Mina’s paleness that Harker had noticed previously in chapter 19 is being referenced in chapter 21. Reinfield notices her paleness and seems to be linking them together with Dracula that he must be taking the life from her. (Is this another lucy?) Harker is found lying there unconscious and Mina is kneeling over the edge of the bed, Harkers blood is being sucked out of him from a wount on his chest by the count as the men walk into the room which was behind closed doors. As they break down the door and enter the room they hold up the offering (communion) and the count retreats due to the holiness of the matter. The count had been trying to destroy the copies of their documents and journals, but they have a second source of all the encounters. Harker opens his joural by stating that he must do something before he goes mad, he continues to write in his diary to prevent him from doing so. Mina finds herself breaking down saying that she is unclean from drinking the blood of Harker when the count had made her Dracula breaks Reinfields neck and kills him. He had made one more visit to him before doing so. Holmwood and all of the other men obtain the keys to the many houses of dracula Melanie LeMay Dracula Notes: Chapters 24-27 XXIV: Van Helsing and his “crew” discover that Dracula has boarded a ship known as the Czarina Catherine. This ship comes from the same Russian port which he had sailed months before. (When he slowly picked off crew members, one by one until destroying the entire ship). Once they find where and what he is going to do, the men are given a speech by Van Helsing. This speech declares that it is necessary to defeat Dracula for the good of all people and mankind. The world is being “set free” by the crew of men. This time however, the crew is not just men, Mina asks to come along because of her “telepathic” abilities she has with the count. She no longer wants to not counted in the hunt for count Dracula since she is a women, she believes that she should be able to go along as well. Harker then sets out to make the travel arrangements to Varna to meet the count and stop him. XXV: Mina asks the men another question, this time however the demand is life or death. Mina asks the men to comply with her wishes to be destroyed if she were to turn into a vampire. October 12 comes around and the group of individuals boards the Orient Express which will be taking them to Varna. Helsing arranges to immediately board the Czarina Catherine after the arrival of it in the port. While they are on the boat, as the days go by, Mina is falling weaker. As they are in Varna now, they hear bad news that Dracula is not in Varna and that his ship had bypassed the area completely. They must board a train to the new port where Dracula is in the hopes of being able to get on his ship to defeat him. Mina’s telepathic connection between Dracula may have been what has given away their location and effort to destroy him, suggested Helsing. Helsing needs to find a way so that their plan isn’t foiled once more so they can finally defeat the monstrous count Dracula that has been causing havoc all over the countries in the surrounding area. XXVI: Seward is writing in his diary today, he is talking about how minas abilities are working less and less revealing almost nothing about Dracula. The only thing she is hearing is the sound of water representing that Dracula is somewhere near the water still, meaning he is close to the port and they are on the right trail. The men had hopes that they would make it their before the box is unloaded from te boat, but the men are too late, the captain helps lead them into the right direction of where the box has gone. He tells them that a business man had picked it up and passed it off to another man, but that man was found in a graveyard with a gruesome accident occurred to him, His neck was destroyed and throat cut out. They are using mina to find ways that the count could have used to escape back to his castle, and they split up and spread out back to his castle in 3 different means of transportation. Train, boat and by horse back, 2 people go each way. Van Helsing’s hopes are to make it to his castle before the count. If he does he will be able to purify the castle before his return. Harker and Arthur spot a ship and believe that it holds the count, Helsing and Mina continue their way back to the castle on the same route that Harker had taken in the beginning of the novel. The scene is very similar, what is the reasoning behind this? Is this making a connection between the beginning and the end of the novel, does this symbolize something? XXVII: Van Helsing has found that he is unable to control and hypnotize mina anymore and that he is fearing for her safety and must take different measures to ensure that she is ok. He encircles her with the holy communion wafers that he has crunched up. He lays them around her in the hopes of protecting her. The same female vampires reappear trying to lurk HElsing and Mina to them, they try hard to resist them. With the holy communion wafers around Mina, helsing leaves her there while she is sleeping and continues to the castle on foot since the horse had died. When he arrives at the castle, he is tempted by the beauty of 3 female vampires in their tumbs. He forces himself despite being paralyzed by beauty to destroy them with the needed rituals. Similarly to when he tried to seal Lucy’s coffin, he seals the one inscribed with the counts name with the putty made from the communion wafer so that he would not be able to gain access to it. After trying to move east to meet the others, they encounter gypsies where holmwood and seward aim at them, and shoot. From where mina is she can see the count, Harker goes through draculas neck, and morris goes into his chest into his heart. Dracula dies, and his body is crumbling down. Morris is fatally wounded in the act, but before he dies he notes that the scar on mina is gone, she is no longer holding onto the count. Melanie LeMay Dracula: Chapters XV – XVIII Notes XV – Summary It is after the burial of Lucy in the cemetery at her tomb. Van Helsing and Seward are going to perform the task in which they need to do on lucy. (Cut her head off, stab her with a stake) When they get there however, they find that the is not in the coffin, and that alarms them. Seward is positioned further back than Helsing when a white figure is seen in the trees. They make a move towards it to find a child left alone (One of Lucy’s soon to be victims). They see that the child is not harmed in anyway and have to decide whether or not they want to bring it to the police or the Heath. The decide against the police to limit the amount of people questioning them and having the police discover why they were in the cemetery late at night. The Following evening they return to the cemetery to the coffin to find lucy present, this time looking more alive than ever. Her lips were red with color and her cheeks brushed pink. We can assume that she was out in the night with a victim. She is in the tomb once, but the other time they go to check she is the next time looking for alive than ever They bring the child elsehere so they don’t suspect anything if they were going to bring the chuld to the police. XVI – Summary Seward, Arthur, Morris, and Helsing this time all prepare to go to the cemetery to “mutilate” lucy. They are prepared to cut off her head, fill her mouth with garlic and put a stake through her body. Once they arrive at the cemetery, it is found that lucy is not in her coffin again. Seward is addressed by Helsing, he asks him if she was present the evening before and he replies yes. Where could she be, they all wonder. Helsing pulls a white wafer out from his coat and mashes it into a putty mix. He says he is going to use it to seal the coffin because it is one of the wafers/ offerings at church and it will keep lucy from going back to the coffin and getting inside it. All of the sudden they see lucy! They don’t know its her at first because she is walking with her head down and a child with her, the child lets out a moan, and it is finally seen that it is in fact lucy. The bends over the child like a dog protecting a bone (paraphrased). Lucy tells Arthur to go with her and be with her (her changed personality is there). She runs to the coffin but because of the offering mixed putty she just stands there, a golden crucifix is held infront of her and she becomes surrounded. Helsing begins the task, but has Arthur kiss her on the lips before cutting her head off, filling her mouth with garlic and soddering the coffin back together. Her different personality is really showing this chapter as she is asking Arthur to come be with her and join her and never be without her again. Arthur finally gets to kiss her on the lips, then she is “mutilated” XVII The chapter begins with Helsing and Seward going to the hotel where Helsing finds a telegram for him. It states that Mina and Harker are coming up to stay with them. Soon after the short journal entry of Seward, it goes to Mina’s journal. The journal is dated with the date that Lucy had been beheaded and the task had been completed upon her. Mina begs seward to tell her about Lucy’s death, he does not wish to comply with that demand. This Chapter goes back and forth between Seward and Mina Harker’s diary, then to jonathans. There are many points of views in this story, all written in a similar style but since they come from different people we are able to see how everything plays out in the “eyes” of the characters so to speak. Jonathan researches the “boxes” that were being shipped from Transylvania to England and finds that all of them had been sent to the same location. XVIII Harker, Seward and Mina are all together. Mina is granted permission to go see Rienfield. When she arrives at the asylum, she is greeted by spiders and flies. Helsing is very pleased in Mina’s work for she has typed up all the documents in order for him to read. Helsing discusses with the remainder of his company that the only way to kill Dracula will be to over power him with communion wafers, crucifixes, and holy items. But first to do so they will have to track down the boxes of earth that he had sent her from Transylvania. Melanie LeMay March 18, 2015 Dracula Chapters 10-14 Notes and Annotations Lucy is with the doctor and Van Helsing, she is at deaths door as they say multiple times in the chapters. She needs a blood transfusion according to the doctor. She is pale, and lacking life, similar to how they describe the count earlier on in the novel. Her weird habits however do not startle anyone in the way that Dracula’s have startled Harker. (No one is reading his encounters in the journal so they do not know about the weird things happening up at the caste) Lucy gets her blood transfusion, but Dr Sewald notes after Arthur leaves about the mark on her throat, they play it off as if it was not there and continue with their business. Lucy was close to death so the doctor and Van Helsing are trying to help her. They decide to go ahead with a “Blood Transfusion” of some sorts. For the reader you can picture that this medical procedure is really not what it seems but something else. For while reading, we already know about the vampire in the story and we can predict what is to come of the novel. Lucy received the transfusion and Helsing left her, leaving the Dr. in charge of watching her and making sure that she is alright during the evening. XI The Chapter opens with a brief exerpt from lucy Westerna’s diary. It simply states that she is enjoying the flowers in the room and that the smell is comforting and putting her to sleep. She closes and it immediately goes to Dr sewards diary. Dr. Sewards diary starts with him traveling and arriving back at Lucy’s residence. Her mother greets them there. Mrs. Westerna tells them that Lucy is still sleeping and that she did not want to wake her but the foul smelling flowers in the room all had to go. She found the “flowers” around her neck, all throughout her room, and felt that the scent would be too over powering for her so she took them all out and opened the window. I feel like this mother has no idea what is going on. I kind of don’t like knowing what’s happening in the back-story since we all know what is going to happen. When the Dr. finds her he found her near death again. They note that she is running out of blood matches. Wolf escapes from the zoo. Reinfield yelling “The Blood is Life” over and over again after licking up blood from the doctors cut wrists. This message should seem concerning to everyone involved. Lucys mother dies after the scare with the wolf. XII Lucy7u’s household becomes a mess. The maid is killed, her mother is dead, and lucy is once again at “deaths door” Mina does not know what is happening in Lucy’s life so she writes to her announcing that her and Johnathon had gotten married and that they are moving to England. Lucy: Lucy has a boat load of issues. Helsing surrounds her with garlic, which is now revealed and identified as the flower that her mother had removed from the room in the previous chapters. She pushes that away while she sleeps. Helsing believes she is close to death and awakens Holmwood so that he can say his last goodbyes. She demands him to kiss her, but holmwood is only allowed to kiss her on the forehead, he complies and she dies. Reinfield had escaped again attacking 2 more men We can do nothing as yet. Wait and see _ what could they be planning? Jonathon and Mina- in the journal they note that they have seen a tall figured man with the same mustache as count Dracula and they believe he is in London with them. Lucy is buried with Garlic cloves spread over her casket and body with a crucifix in her mouth. Helsing tells Seward that they will have to make a change to her body. That change is cutting off her head and removing her heart. “but why do it at all? The girl is dead. Why mutilate her poor body without need” I feel like he is starting to get suspicious of the actions taking place with Van Helsing. Starts with Mina Harkers Journal Harker starts a new diary after learning that Dracula has traveled from Transylvania to London. Do you suppose that whoever made the small holes in the children made the same ones in Miss Lucy….? He covers his head and face and says “They were made by Miss Lucy” (WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!) Jk we already know she likes to suck the blood out of people, little vampires Errrrrywhere.
