US History Midterm WWII test After World War I America enters a period of relative isolationism with a series of Neutrality Acts passed in the 1930s Organizations like the America First Committee led by Charles Lindbergh advocated the United States to stay out of Europe39s affairs and worry about the Great Depression taking place here at home Additionally the United States didn39t want to get overly involved in Europe39s affairs since they had failed to ever pay us back the money we loaned them in World War I Therefore we weren39t too anxious to get deeper in debt by loaning them more money they probably wouldn39t pay back this time either After World War II we changed our foreign policy by becoming EXTREMELY involved in Europe39s affairs Examples would be Marshall Plan George Marshall sec of state 1947 gave monetary support to help rebuild European economies after the end of World War II in order to prevent the spread of Soviet communism Truman Doctrine American policy in 1947 of providing economic and military aid to Greece and Turkey because they were threatened by communism It was the start of the containment policy to stop Soviet expansion it was a major step in beginning the Cold War Point Four Program US foreign aid project aimed at providing technological skills knowledge and equipment to poor nations throughout the world The program also encouraged the flow of private investment capital to these nations Truman 1949 Formation of the CIA NATO United Nations All of these were a part of America39s policy of containment George F Kennan Truman Doctrine Communist rebels with Soviet backing would launch wars in Greece Iran and Turkey This led to the announcement of the Truman Doctrine whereby the US would assist any free nation resisting forcible takeover a in gm policy che US sent military and economic E to those countries fighting communist forces This was a part of the US strategy of containment The Containment Policy was further pursued ia che Marshall Plan 1947 Of economic to help Europe recover from the Win These plans were highly successful and by 1948 communist insurgencies in Greece Iran and Turkey had been defeated NATO Mounting antagonism led to the creation of a defensive alliance among Western nations The North Atlantic Treaty Organization NATO was formed m April 1949 between 12 western na ons US Neutrality The US did not want to relive WWI especially amid a severe Depression Thus the US played its role as neutral observer while electing E to Q unprecedented E tel in E thinking that it might not be a wise time to change leadership Several pieces of legislation enforced US neutrality or were steps to keep the US out of the war for as long as possible 0 o Neutrality Acts 1935 amp 1937 Forbade US citizens from selling or transporting arms munitions or making loans or traveling on ships Of nations at war Also established Cash and Carry trade meaning those that wanted nonmilitary US products had to transport them on their own ships indirectly aided British with large fleet Neutrality Acts of 1939 Banned US ships from traveling into war zones but also allowed Cash and Carry purchase of US warrnaterials LendLease Act 1941 US became the arsenal of democracy as President could end lease or exchange war materials withnations seen as vital to US security By July 1941 FDR permittedconvoys to escort LendLease ships By the time of the passage of the Atlantic Charter 1941 between Britain and US calling for Q tyranny to E destroyed and peace on high seas to be maintained and the adoption of the first peacetime US draft September 1941 it is pretty clear America is headed to war US forced to enter WW1 due to unrestricted submarine warfare WW2 due to pearl harbor
