I have never enjoyed history class (I'm a science/math person) but Dr. Drake made it so interesting! Made you feel included even though it was a big class. ...Continue reading

Such an interesting lecturer. I withdrew from the class because I made a huge mistake of my own on the first exam, but I think all of you could get a B if you work hard enough! I learned so much and basically enjoyed his lectures by the end. Unfortunately your grade is based pretty much completely on your TA but wasnt much of a problem because his lectures were so interesting. Kinda have to go to class and you definitely have to read the 3 books for the 3 papers. but all in all really enjoyed it! ...Continue reading

Honestly, I couldn't have asked for a better lecturer than Dr. Drake. He pulls up an outline and just explains the bullet points. Can be boring. Must handwrite notes in class. His tests are all short answer and essay. You will learn what they TAs look for when they grade them. You can do well in this class but you will have to work. But he is an enthusiastic speaker. ...Continue reading

Drake is awesome! There are only 3 tests (all open answer) and 1 paper, and he grades hard, but he cares about the bigger picture more than specific names and dates. He cracks some jokes, and definitely makes coming to class enjoyable. It's not an easy class, but I would definitely recommend it! Probably the best history teacher I've ever had. TAs grade everything, so how you do depends on your TA. I thought I deserved better grades than I did, but I'm not complaining because I only studied for 30 minutes to an hour the night before and didn't take tests seriously. ...Continue reading

He is a funny guy and he is clearly very passionate about history. By far the best teacher I have ever had. He makes you remember the importance of learning for its own sake and he genuinely cares about the topics in history. I never thought I would actually enjoy a 9 am history class but I found myself in shock when it was time to leave. He's awesome. There are two sections, ID terms and short answer. In total, five questions. You have to write everything you know about a single name, word, or quote. And based off of your clarity and ability to relate the term/quote back to a bigger picture determines your grade in the class. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 4/5
Dr. Drake is awesome. However, your grade is up to your TA, so in the 3 tests and 3 papers, ask the TA for what they're looking for. The only reason you'll need the textbook is for the documents at the end of the chapter. All of the other information is covered in the lectures. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 4/5
The way he structures class is very plain. He goes pretty fast and every class has a lot of detail so attendance is definitely encouraged. The tests are really difficult, all essay style, so if your TA is a tough grader (like mine is), the class will be rough. As far as history professors go, I'd say Drake is pretty solid. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 4/5
There are only three tests, one of which being the final along with an essay that go into your final grade. Your grade really does depend on your TA, so get to know himher as well as you can! And, no, you don't have to read 6 books in one semester. I only had to read 3, and they were pretty interesting. Overall, I learned to like history! Attendance isn't manditory for lecture but is part of your grade for break-out sessions with your TA. It is suggested you go to class anyway. The grade depends on your TA entirely. Tests are complicated and hard to know exactly what to focus on when studying. ...Continue reading

Really good class. Exams are relatively straightforward but require a few days of studying - also will not know which historical documents will be on exam so it is imperative to know all of them fairly well. He's great! However, it sucks if you get a hard TA. This class is entirely graded by TAs, so your interaction with Drake is fairly limited. I would recommend this class, but beware it requires LOTS of reading! Seriously, LOTS. ...Continue reading

I never liked history before this class, but he made me appreciate it. His class was challenging with reading 6 books in 1 semester, but if you do the readings and study for the exams you'll do well. The class was awesome! I can't wait to take him for a 3000 level history. My only objection is that the TA's grade exams & can sometime grades can vary. However, Dr. Drake is such a good lecturer, you will actually like the course and subject material. The only grades are 3 tests and a paper. The tests are only essays and are tough to do well on in just a short amount of time. ...Continue reading

GRADING IS TOUGH. I had a 9:05 am class with him and he always kept me awake. His TAs grade everything and are tough graders they didn't really make the grading criteria clear. However, having Dr. Drake as the professor and lecturer is so worth it! ...Continue reading

TAKE DRAKE! He makes the material extremely interesting, especially if History isn't your thing. He made me consider a double major. His outlines are very helpful for lecture and the break-out sessions make learning that much easier. A few papers and written tests but it's manageable. Definitely take him for this class if you can. The grading is really evenly dispersed (2 tests and a final, paper, and Breakout attendance/participation) and his lectures are very clear and straightforward! There aren't study guides which can be difficult, but if you go to class you'll do well on tests. ...Continue reading

I enjoyed Drake and listening to his lectures, however your grade in the class is completely determined by your TA, so it depends on which one you get. He is passionate about what he's teaching and his lectures are engaging. Attendance will help because what's on the test is what's in the reading and his lectures. Pretty heavy reading work load. Most of his lectures are entertaining, but he posts them online so class is not mandatory. The tests are straightforward and not too bad if you study. However, your grade solely depends on your TA... ...Continue reading

Dr. Drake is seriously so awesome and has amazing lectures! Two lectures a week (attendance not taken, but I really suggest it) and a breakout session on Fridays... breakouts are mandatory and are held with a TA. Dr. Drake was one of the greatest lecturers I ever had at UGA. He is so passionate about what he's teaching and you can tell he loves what he does. Drake is one of the best lecturers I've ever had. It takes a minute to get the hang of things but by the first test if you follow the formula (that he CLEARLY gives) you'll do fine. Despite thinking it was cool, the music at the beginning of class was kinda lame. ...Continue reading

How to get an A on Drake's tests: Go to lecture, don't just take notes on the easy stuff, read the book and look for the BIG PICTURE because thats half of the points on his essay-based tests. He masterfully presents difficult topics of the last two centuries in an impartial manner. This isn't your high-school-football-coach-taught History class, Drake is the real deal. Three rather straightforward but tedious papers. Tests are an easy A if you listen to key points in class. Drake is a great lecturer, and the tests are all free response/essay format. If you are looking for an A, this is likely not the class. The presentation of the material was awesome, but the work is graded pretty seriously (by your TA). ...Continue reading

I've never been one to LOVE history but Dr. Drake makes it really interesting. Attendance isn't taken so you can skip if you need to. Grade depends on TA- Don't skip breakout, take advantage of TA office hours before papers and tests. Lots of reading but overall manageable and fun class! I think back on his class often. I can honestly not say enough good things about Dr. Drake. There is a LOT of reading. Read all of them! Tests are 4 IDs (2 from the books) and an essay. The TAs determine your grade so participate and go to office hours for help. It was definitely time consuming and often difficult but I learned A LOT. Did not enjoy his class. He was fun and clearly passionate about the subject, but his lectures are difficult to sit through. He begins the year by stating that As are rare and that Cs are a good grade. GPA lowering class. Too much reading load. ...Continue reading

Great professor. We had to buy 5+ books for the class, actually used like 2 of them. No need to get the reading books he assigns, you can easily just find the summaries online, Wasted my money. Your grade depends on TA, I had a good one. Others, not so much. Take advantage of review sessions! He is a likable guy and his lectures are interesting, yet there is only 3 tests and one essay. The tests are graded very hard. YOU HAVE TO READ A LOT. He assigns books to read in addition to textbook, so good luck if you take him :) ...Continue reading

Dr. Drake is a very good lecturer, you won't dread going to class. I don't know where these negative comments come from. He's engaging and his passion for history makes his lectures very interesting and easy to attend. You'll get the grade if you study the material and read the text book, but most importantly go to class! He keeps it interesting. Definitely would recommend him. He adds little tidbits that help and are really interesting!!! Love him!! ...Continue reading

Drake is a very interesting lecturer, despite rambling to fill in the dead time between his thoughts. Drake is a very passionate teacher and he makes the material both interesting and easy to understand. I would definitely take another history class of his if I could. TAKE HIS CLASS. Grade depends on how cool your TA is.. . mine was great though. Knows and loves what he is talking about. Lectures are interesting. Your TA grades all of your work (3 tests, 3 papers, quizzes). I think all of the TA's were fairly hard graders. DO THE READING (weekly reading from textbook for participation & pop quizzes, also 3 add. books). Tests were pretty easy ...Continue reading

Professor Drake was great. He's hilarious but sensitive to the painful parts of history at the same time, and really cares about making history real and fun. Would take only Drake classes if I could. Plus, Hist 2112 only has 4 grades. Bless. Granted, the class is much easier if you enjoy history. If not, Drake is still plenty entertaining. Just study up. The grading criteria is often unclear, and all of the TAs are very tough graders. The tests are definitely easier than the papers. I liked the material and class as a whole, but the TAs ruin it. ...Continue reading

Dr. Drake has been my favorite teacher so far. He tries his best to make every lecture bearable for everyone. Show up to lecture because he teaches to his tests and you're not going to get the same quality from the textbook alone. All in all a good professor, would take a class with him again. Also: READ! I didn't mind waking up early for his class. However, I rarely skipped his class, but I still didn't score extremely high on the 3 tests and 1 paper he assigned. That was all my TA though, and he graded fairly. It is just a lot of reading and I procrastinated on that sometimes. ...Continue reading

I had an awesome TA who could lead helpful discussions and didnt just drill us to see if we read. Test format are 4 ID questions and a large essay which are usually straight forward and have been touched upon in class. Great course recommend this professor. ...Continue reading

Drake is very interested in his subject and also makes class pretty interesting too! He class is not easy but it was really fun. You could tell that he really liked what he was teaching. His lectures were never boring. I hated history before this class but I am leaving liking it a little more. There is a lot of reading but that's to be expected. I highly recommend him! His lectures are super interesting and he is very passionate about the subject. The TAs are pretty inconsistent with grades, but that's the only downside. The class has a lot of reading, but it's History, so that's what you get ...Continue reading

Dr. Drake was awesome! His class is hard. Do not expect an A, but expect to learn. He really does teach you and care about the topics he lectures about. He makes this interesting. His tests are all essays, but they are fine as long as you study a ton. ...Continue reading

Class was not bad, if you don't mind writing a lot. I actually look forward to his lectures. The tests are essay format and can be pretty hard but as long as you take lecture notes and read the primary source doc's you'll be fine. Great professor who genuinely loves what he does. I always enjoyed the topics he covered in class. I personally found the 3 tests and 3 papers to be very easy, but some of my classmates had different experiences. If you show up and put in a little work you should get at least a B. ...Continue reading
