Professor Reviews in MATH 308

  • Class rating 3/5
My grandmother died and he refused to consider the funeral as an excused absence. Not a good teacher. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 1/5
Horrid professor. Had an average of about 30/100 on a test for the class, didn't go over the material again but kept testing on that one section for about half the total. Most students in the course were in engineering, we're not dumb people. I still have the email thread to prove it. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 1/5
Yep, most likely worst prof i have had, ended up dropping the class in 5th week. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 1/5
Test material vastly different from class material. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 5/5
This professor is for all those who want to gain an application-oriented approach towards linear algebra. Prof. Bekyel is well-prepared for lectures, but her exams are super easy!! So if you want to score high in this class pay attention to every detail! But if you want a more theoretical approach then this would be disappointing. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 5/5
He's very reasonable and straightforward about the course material. At the beginning of the course, he will warn that the hardest part of the class is keeping track of all of the vocabulary, which is entirely true. Occasionally though he mentions the most random, hilarious things during lecture. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 3/5
Nice guy. Great resource in office hours. His lectures are funny sometimes and he does a good job at making a dry subject somewhat interesting. His tests were tough and expectations weren't clearly defined. The average final grade was 90% so its incredible competitive to get a good grade ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 5/5
Tests make up basically all your grade and they are all memorization. He is very clear about what you need to do to succeed in his class. In fact, he posts the old quizes online and then reuses the exact same ones! Yes he is quite specific about definitions and preciseness but he gives you the quiz beforehand. Interesting lecturer, tells a lot of jokes and make math seem less dull. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 5/5
So many negative reviews! Good at what he does, but he will make you work very, very hard. People don't like him because he is very high-minded and haughty, but he will take the time to help in Office Hours if you need it. Overall, VERY hard, but not terrible. I'd only reccomend him for upper level classes. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 4/5
Really nice, funny guy who actually wants to learn your name. Tells you EXACTLY what he expects on tests, makes resources such as old exams easily accessible. Consistent with definitions and expectations, and drills them in you repetitively. Helpful outside of class. Unfortunately, doesn't really explain how to use what he teaches. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 3/5
Pros: consistent and clear on expectations, makes resource such as past exams and online notes very accessible and useful, good at answering questions, funny and interesting. I rather enjoyed his class and his explanations were clear. I don't understand the other complaints ask intelligent questions (i.e. actually study) and you'll get intelligent answers from him. ~130 questions in 50 minutes. However he posts practice tests online and takes most all questions directly from that. If you can memorize hundreds of facts and statements and write them quickly you'll do well. Not all practice test questions have answers so don't skip class. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 3/5
Pros: Funny, interesting, consistent, clear, provides good explanations if asked, available for in-depth help outside of class, makes old exams available, makes exams similar to old exams, rewards students that memorize his definitions with good grades. Cons: class success and exams based on memorization and regurgitation, completely useless homework, does not do examples, does not explain unless asked, often offtrack. His class is certainly very hard and very challenging. I was able to do well, however it was the only class I took during the quarter. The key is to focus on the practice midterms and finals and ask him questions concerning them well in advance, as the finals are exactly the same. I thought he was very kind and humorous. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 3/5
Interesting professor, made class fairly interesting and wasn't a bore. Final(120 min) has almost 200 questions. Most of them T/F, or writing definitions. He provides lots of past exams, quizzes which he will re-use on the exam but still it requrires hardcore memorizing Cons: class based on memorization, doesn't do examples, doesn't explain unless asked, useless HW ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 3/5
Midterm(50 min) contains 80 quesitons including T/F question in which if you guess wrong, you get minus points (and of course, no points for skipping). He's pretty much a math genius. He provides a lot of resources that are really helpful for studying. That being said, you REALLY have to put in a lot of effort to do well. As in, memorize everything word for word. The final is worth 70% of your grade and is nothing like the homework. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 5/5
lol about everyone complaining. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 4/5
Paul has a great personality, lectures are fine, provides tons of past tests with answers that are fairly close to what he asks on the exams. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 5/5
One of the hardest 308 profs out there. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 5/5
He's really a fun guy ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 2/5
Paul Smith is the reason I will not be taking any more math classes at UW. If you're an engineering major, avoid him. His class is a theory class, so there's really no application of the material, just definitions and theorems. If you memorize his past exams and go to his office hours, you should be ok. That aside, he's an awful teacher. One homework assignment couldn't be graded, so he assigned an arbitrary grade to them instead. Hates spending any of his personal time on you. He even claimed that some students weren't capable of handling this class as an excuse for not helping us study for the final. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 3/5
Smith is an intelligent professor, but can have difficulty explaining concepts clearly in lecture. But his tests are absolutely ridiculous, they are all about memorizing and writing out definitions and theorems word for word. I would avoid taking a class from him unless you want to make linear algebra your life. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 3/5
I really enjoyed his lectures. He is not a very good teacher (all he does is write proofs, very few example problems), and his tests are exceedingly difficult and worth way too much of your overall grade. (For reference, the final is worth 70%). He is often rude or overly harsh to students. Also, hes kinda a jerk which is only funny sometimes. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 2/5
Going in the class doesn't seem too bad since he has old tests online and uses parts of them so you think you're ready, but then you go into the test and you have to answer 50 truefalse questions (about math), 25 word for word definitions and 10 math problems in an hours (people don't finish). He makes an already tough class tougher. He bragged about how hard he made the midterm... the average was 70/131. The final was worth 45% of our grade, which is ridiculous. For two of our HWs, UW couldn't afford a grader so he took 2 points off our 2nd best score. You have to memorize definitions and theorems, and exams are difficult to finish on time. I'd recommend him if you are planning on majoring in pure math. For engineering, find someone less theoretical or take AMATH 352 instead. He usually has a good sense of humor, but watch out for generalizations of Americans. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 2/5
His lectures are heavily based on proofs and theorems. Yes, they are important in upper levels, but none of the 308, I repeat, NONE, focuses so heavily on theoretical stuff. His exams are all about memorization, and if you don't have time to go through like 5 past exams, do NOT take this. A 3.0 in this class is like a 4.0 in others. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 3/5
Paul is very intense on the theory. I would recommend reading the textbook and knowing definitions and theorems cold. He grades harshly and subtle differences matter to him. Expect low averages on the midterm (40-50&) and do well on the final - it's worth 70% of your grade. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 3/5
If you're a math major, I'd say go with him. He's really funny and liked to joke around with students in the front rows. But the class was horrible. It's not a math class, it's a vocabulary class. If you memorize every definition and theorem in the book then you can get maybe a 50% on the tests. This guy obviously knows his stuff but 308 still almost killed me ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 1/5
Defiantly the rudest professor I have had. His exams are SAT style, including completing math definations. No calculator, no cheat sheet, no partial score for solving problems! Our exam was 70Qs in 55 mins! Terrible teacher! ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 1/5
Makes a fairly straightforward class confusing. Math has been my strong field until he made me feel miserable about myself and math eventhough 308 is an easy class. He doesn't know stuff and never clears doubts clearly. All his explanation is incomplete and not understandable. Never take his class unless you want to feel really miserable about yourself. All he requires is memorization of definitions. In addition, his tests are very confusing in which no one in the class ever finished. DO NOT take him. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 1/5
He will, 100%, grade based on how much he likes you. Believe them. He has a reputation on campus for a reason. Angry person. Takes it out on students. Uses his power to belittle them in lecture. It was horrible to watch. Arrogant and mean. I have never seen a professor so openly cruel to students. Appalling. ...Continue reading

  • Class rating 1/5
The worse professor I never have had before. You come out of the class knowing nothing, and if you want to get a decent grade you gotta memorize his old out-of-date finals, which usually have no solutions paired with them. Will not hesitate to call students out. Doesn't teach the material merely babbles theory and simply has you memorize finals. ...Continue reading

He is the worst professor I have ever had. he was really mean at times regarding the math questions students asked however nice when it came to questions unrelated to math.
