He's ok. I'm a business major, but I learned ALOT from his class, and I feel like I retained alot of it, too. The material is straightforward, his lectures and slides are extrmly organized, the work is all very easy if you just listen and review the slides. Enjoyable. Recommended. Pretty easy grader but extremely dull class. Reduces the 5000 word paper to a 3000 word paper but it's still a chore to do on a topic that you don't care about for a GE class. If I could've found a different GE class I would've taken it but he's okay. 1 paper, 1 lab, 2 tests, 10 minute presentation, extra credit. ...Continue reading

Great professor. One midterm and one final based on lecture slides. One final paper about 2000-3000 words. Two easy labs. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO TAKE THIS CLASS!!! ...Continue reading

Very nice professor, and is enthusiastic about all aspects of linguistics. Very bright and can be funny even though he tries not to be. Understands the material very well and is a wonderful teacher. I didn't think I'd be interested in this subject but his passion for the topic and teaching made it a great class. ...Continue reading

John Fry is a great teacher. Some may not find animal noises interesting, but many of his computer linguistics classes were interesting, up to date, and he knows his stuff. I also took his 115, 165, and 124 classes because I am interested in Linguistics besides my major. No need to attend class because lectures are based off of the course reader. There are 2 essays, 2 labs, 1 midterm and 1 final. He doesn't offer extra credit so make sure to do all the work. ...Continue reading

This was a really interesting class. He used a lot of documentaries to illustrate points. I liked it. If animal behavior and documentaries are not your thing, then you probably wouldn't like it. Dan is really knowledgeable. ...Continue reading

I liked this teacher, but did not like the subject. I did horrible on the test but did good on the papers and still managed to pass with a B! Dr. Silverman is very thorough in his lectures so take good notes and listen this will help with the test and papers. To ace the class read the book and study for the test. ...Continue reading

Take this class! He is coo, he is funny or as much as can be with linguistics. I think he is fair, and I like how he makes class quick and painless. I think it is unfortunate he is not a professor in my discipline, as I would take him again. He is a fun guy to take and you may not have fun, but you will like him. ...Continue reading

Boring class! Most of the time you´re lost not really understanding whats going on. Hes not very clear or good at explaining the concepts. Because of this its hard to do the essays and tests. He gives you the powerpoints which has all the info...and thats pretty much all you can rely on and hope for the best. ...Continue reading

Dan is a really nice guy, but he is very confusing. I never knew what to expect on tests or what he wanted on the essays. I got really bad grades on all the assignments but still got an A&#63 Everyone did terrible in the class. I learned NOTHING. I guess it was an easy A, but I stressed throughout the entire semester b/c I didnt know what was going on It's an Advanced GE course, so it attracted a lot of non-Ling majors. Was not clear what he expected in the written assignments, and would mark you down. Read off the slides the entire time (which belonged to the professor formerly teaching the course). Kind of nice. Disorganized. Sends a million pointless emails. ...Continue reading
