Who are the funk brothers? why were they central to the ‘motown sound’ and the success of the record label?



Motown  

1. Berry Gordy intended to create African American music that was performed and managed  by Black artists and aimed directly at the _______mainstream_________ without  ‘____selling__________ ____out_____ .’ Because of his effort to foster a unique sound,  related to yet distinctive from earlier rhythm and blues styles, few examples of  ____12________ ___bar______ ____blues________ can be found in Motown recordings.

2. Who are the Funk Brothers? Why were they central to the ‘Motown Sound’ and the success of the record label?


Who was james jamerson? how do the musicians interviewed regard him as a musician, and what unique contributions did he bring to the funk brothers?



A very successful musician group from Detroit.  

They were central to the Motown Sound and the record label’s success because they were the  it’s essence. Without the Funk Brothers the Motown sound would not exist, and the record label  wouldn’t be nearly as successful. If you want to learn more check out What makes water an excellent solvent?

3. Who was James Jamerson? How do the musicians interviewed regard him as a musician,  and what unique contributions did he bring to the Funk Brothers?

James Jamerson was the bassist of the Funk Brothers.  

According to the other musicians regarded him as super creative, free, fearless, and  experimental. He had amazing timing, and therefore could contribute his unique cut time, as well as creativity.  


Describe the jazz club scene in detroit during the 1950s. how did this scene influence the motown musicians and their own musical style in motown recording sessions?

4. Describe the recording environment at ‘Hitsville U.S.A.’ How do the musicians returning to  the studio for the first time in decades describe their experiences there?  

The recording environment at ‘Hitsville U.S.A’ was the home of the Motown sound. It was a small  recording room where hit records were cranked out in an hour.

Returning musicians say their experiences were unforgettable, and they never felt the same after leaving the recording room.  

5. Describe the jazz club scene in Detroit during the 1950s. How did this scene influence the  Motown musicians and their own musical style in Motown recording sessions?

The jazz club scene was very relaxed, and allowed the Motown musicians to return to their blues  roots. This scene influenced the musicians and their style as sounds/ ideas from the jazz club  scene made it into the recording sessions.

6. Based on the film, Standing in the Shadows of Motown, what do you think made the  ‘Motown sound’ so unique and successful? How would you describe this ‘sound’ in your  own words? Lastly, why do you think the Funk Brothers went so long with so little  widespread recognition for their musical achievements? Participation Worksheet: Friday, February 5th – Motown  

The ‘Motown sound’ was so unique and successful probably due to all the different instruments  and rhythms incorporated. The Funk brothers went so long without recognition because people  never wanted to credit the musicians themselves.
