Midterm Outline Guide  Reconstruction Year : 1863-1883 Events that happened I. Emancipation Prostamation was signed by president Abraham Lincoln January 1 , 1863, which had slaves freed in all federal states. II. Civil Rights Act in April 1866 declared every citizen have equal protection protected by law. III. Freedmen’s Bureau of 1865 helped aid all freedmen in the South during reconstruction. IV. Fourteenth Amendment was created to ensure the freed people in the south were sustained, and it declares equal rights and protection for former slaves. Southerners were not too pleased with this amendment. V. Reconstruction Act of 1867 divided the south into 5 districts, and each one had its command of a Union general. VI. Fifteenth Amendment everyone has the power to vote despite race, color or “previous condition of servitude.” VII. Plessy vs. Ferguson case where Homer A. Plessy was arrested after sitting in the white only section of a train. The fourteenth amendment was supposed to protect him, but it was in favor to be equal to both races before the law.  Populist Year: 1897 1. Farmers Alliance were tired of being taken advantage of by larger cooperation’s and took a stand. “Irresponsible conflict between capitol and labor.” 2. Sherman Anti-Trust Act no contact of business trade interstate or foreign exchanges. 3. 1906 Meat Inspection Act was about the lack if cleanliness in the meatpacking industry, and was given attention because of a reaction to Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. 4.   Progressive a. Eighteenth Amendment Prohibition of Alcohol was created to  outlaw production, sale and shipment of alcohol in the United  States. Believed it would reduce violence, but instead did the  opposite. b. Food and Drug Administration protecting and providing health to  the general public   c. Sixteenth Amendment   congress shall have power to lay and  collect taxes on incomes. d. Seventeenth Amendment popular election of the United States  Senators by the people of the states.  e. Nineteenth Amendment women’s right to vote.   New Deal    a.k.a    “  Alphabet Soup " I    Social Security II    Federal Housing III    Emergency Banking Act IV     National Public Relief Program V. Public Works Administration
