Psychology 1300 Exam 1- Agan Chapter 1 1. What is a theory? A general principle or a set of principles proposed to explain how a number of separate facts are related. 2. What are the goals of psychology when studied as a science? Description, explanation, prediction, influence 3. What is critical thinking? The process of objectively evaluating claims, propositions, and conclusions to determine whether they follow logically from the evidence presented. 4. Why is the experimental method of research so important? It is the only research method that can be used to identify cause and effect relationships between two or more variables. 5. What is a variable ? Any condition or factor that can be manipulated, controlled, or measured. 6. What is the difference between a controlled group and an experimental group? An experimental group is a group that is exposed to an independent variable. A control group is similar to an experimental group but not given the treatment; it is used for purposes of comparison. Short Answer What are the 3 sources of authority? ( Max Weber) Traditional Authority: Like a parent, someone is telling of; Truths passed; out comes stability, customs, roots Rational Authority: Order by law, not by inheritance -LOGIC, thinking/ deciding - Codes, reason “-OLOGIES” = science -Changes can happen EX: Magna Carta, US Constitution Charismatic Authority: Comes from unconscious, psyche=soul -creativity, hunches, intuitions, inspirations, EXPERIENCE
