Fable 5, page 225  “The Lion’s Share”: A Four-Way Partnership Numquam est fidelis cum potente societas. Never is an alliance with the powerful trustworthy. Testatur haec fabella propositum meum. This fable attests to my premise. Vacca et capella et patiens ovis iniurae The goat and the cow and the sheep, enduring injustice, Socii fuere cum leone in saltibus. Were allies with a lion in the glades. Hi cum cepissent cervum vasti corporis, When they had captured a stag of a huge body, Sic est locutus, partibus factis, leo: Thus the lion said, with the portions rendered: “Ego primam tollo nomine hoc quia rex cluo; “I take the first piece because by this name I am called the king. Secundum, quia sum consors, tribuetis mihi; The second piece, because I am a partner. Tum, quia plus valeo, me sequetur tertia; Then, because I am stronger, the third part will follow me; Malo adficietur si quis quartam tegigerit.” If anyone will have touched the fourth part, he will be faced with misfortune.” Sic totam praedam sola imporbitas abstulit. Thus wickedness alone stole the whole plunder.
