Exam 2 Study Guide Recitation Readings Maria Tatar quotSex and Violencequot 0 Examines evil performed by both male and female characters in fair tales 0 Nearly every character is capable of cruel behavior 0 The Grimm s often tried to add or intensify the violence in their stories 0 Grimm s seemed uncomfortable with sexual references though toned these down a lot 0 Also very much against incest Gilbert and Gubar quotSnow Whitequot 0 Story is really about Snow White and her evil stepmother not her and the seven dwarfs for the stepmother is constantly trying to kill her because of her beauty 0 Bruno Bettelheim quotHansel and Gretelquot o Psychological take on story children develop anxiety and disappointment when they learn their mother can no longer meet their oral demands food and wants to get rid of them 0 The children eating the gingerbread house symbolizes how they are ready to quoteat somebody out of house and homequot 0 Experience at the witches house has gotten rid of the children s oral xations 0 After overcoming the oedipal difficulties and oral anxieties at the witches house the children are ready to return home Topics Terms Patriarchal Society a woman must prove herself worthy not the man 0 Subversion is a threat the established social order and structure For Women trying to undermine stop the power structure quotWomen s desire to grow upquot is a threat to patriarchal society in many coming of age tales Coming of age for boys exemplify courage independence strength 0 When these meet it results in marriage In many stories such as lron Hans the father sets impossible tasks for a prince suitor to accomplish to receive his daughter The quotwild manquot in Iron Hans and others is symbolic of strong inner drives which boys must learn to control Boys leaving home are symbolic of needing to prove themselves and move on o Compicity the act of helping to commit a crime or do wrong in some way For Women most women in these folktales support the patriarchal system Ex Puss In Boots the cat lies many times eats an ogre just so his master can become rich and marry a princess Much of this involves tricking the girls father 0 David Gilmore Manhood in the Making Studied gender roles Womanhood is de ned more biologically puberty Manhood is more dif cult to de ne o Roles protector impregnator provider Studies how different societies and cultures perceive being a man Coming of Age Tales quotHans My Hedgehogquot See summary below The man must overcome his beastly side his women exercises patience throughout the transformation quotFolktales are survivals of traditional coming of agequot 0 The Grimm Brothers Children and Household Tales tale editing 0 The Grimm brothers continuously revised their editions of folktales published 0 1st Edition was faithful to the wording they heard from sources other editions changed sometimes due to controversy 0 Grimms put their own spin on many Children and Household tales Made a point to add or intensify violent episodes a Cinderella Rumpelstiltskin Attempted to edit out sexual references including pregnancy and especially premarital sex a The Frog Prince the prince and princess quotlie down with each otherquot Made many points to reprimand incest and incestuous deske Marie LePrince Beamont quotBeauty and the Beastquot The father daughter relationship in the story parallels an Electra relationship Female version of Oedipus Complex Compared to quotCupid and Psychequot Marie Beaumont Altered the story for the upper middleclass to enjoy Purpose of the tale was to teach goodness 0 Powerful and the Weak 0 There is a relationship between goodevil and powerful weak in folktales They de ne the power in relationships and in morals 0 Utilitarianism the belief that the morally good action is the one that helps the greatest number of people Good Bad in old civilization power was necessary to survive against nature and against fellow men Systems of power will attempt to hide the connection between power and morals Message Good Wins sharing being helpful But morals change they are not timeless 0 Natural LaW is a system of law determined by nature which makes it timeless Christianity Good Evil utilitarian structure is replaced with a religious system This system praises weakness which keeps priests in power 0 Girls to Women Boys to Men 0 0 0 0 0 Children moving from the social de nition of childhood to adu hood Social markers to determine this time Ex Bar Bat Mitzvah Con rmation Often a quotonestep process Psychological Freud l sexuality moving on to grati cation bridegroom and burning the skin so they may not turn back into an animal but must now be a wife Sometimes it results in happy marriage sometimes in escape a Motif 0 Jeptha s Daughter father often wants something for himself makes a deal involving his daughter usually helps the male to win her over Very common in bridegroom tales 0 Lost Key In many tales the character loses an item that causes the story to take off Ex Iron Hans the boy loses his ball that rolls into the wild mans cage causing him to only give it back if he is set free The lost ball is symbolic for a lost identity 0 Literal
