Interpersonal Unit 4 Study Guide: Main topics: -Critical Feedback and Performance Appraisal -Group Dynamic and Formation Theory -Conflict Critical Feedback and Performance Appraisal: -Know that how critical feedback is given is vital -Be able to define critical feedback (evaluate, praise, and/or find fault) -Know that giving criticism demonstrates that the person delivering it cares enough to risk awkwardness -When giving criticism be positive, focus on the behavior not the individual, be specific, give reasons and benefits, offer help, and make sure it’s a dialogue -Be sure that your nonverbal cues match those of your verbal cues when giving criticism Group Dynamic and Formation Theory: -Know the 5 stages of development of groups *Forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning -Know that conformity and deviance are neither good nor bad *Conformity- selecting a course of action that a majority favors or that is socially acceptable (the norm) *Deviance- selecting a course of action that is not socially acceptable or that the majority does not favor -Know the difference between private acceptance and compliance *Compliance- doing what you think the group wants you to do *Private acceptance- conform to beliefs and behaviors -Know social comparison theory (psychological need to evaluate themselves) -Know cognitive dissonance theory (people are influenced by a need to be consistent) *example: Scott likes Bernie Sanders because he thinks he’s trustworthy however he doesn’t agree with his solutions so he might not vote for him -Know reactance theory (how someone reacts to something, like having a freedom taken from them) -Know the different group pressures (there are 2) -Know what minority influence is *people with minority views can be very persuasive and often serve for the greater good Conflict: -Conflict is the process that occurs when people perceive that they have incompatible goals or that someone is interfering in their ability to achieve their objectives -Know the 4 features of conflict *Perception, clashes, unfold over time, and dynamic -Know the dyadic power theory *When you have lots of power those are not the situations where you display the most amount of power (because you don’t need to show off your power) -Know what power currency is -Know the approaches to handling conflict *Avoidance, Accommodation, Competition, Reactivity, Collaboration
