HEALTH   Health­ the state of complete physical, mental and social well being  Society affects people’s health in 4 ways 1 Cultural patterns define health­ 3 meals a day is healthy, certain diseases are ok 2 Cultural standards of health change over time: More women in work place now,  hygiene has changed (shower more) 3 Society’s technology affects Peoples health­ having technology to help us 4 Social inequality affects people’s health – people with more money and private  insurance get better health care  Health in the U.S. 1.Social epidemiology­ The study of how health and disease are distributed throughout a    society’s population A. By age and gender: women have better health then men, baby boys die more than  girls. Children use to die more often than adults in other countries  B. Social class & Race­ African American and Hispanics get sick more often then  Americans. Rich get better health care than the poor. Poor children more likely to  get diseases               2. Health Hazards       A. Cigarette Smoking                   B. Eating Disorders          C. Obesity           D. Sexually transmitted diseases  Scientific Medicine  Holistic Medicine What the 3 theories say about illness  Structural functionalists: it has to have a function: “The sick role”   Symbolic Interactionists­ social constructed health reactions and treatments   Conflict theorists­  illness and healthcare creates inequalities like the difference between  the rich and the poor. They also believe in the profit motive­ all the hospitals and doctor  offices is out to make a profit. It is also used as a political tool or platform   Manufacturers of illness­  companies that produce or promote products that make a  society ill or sick How we pay for our medical services in the US ­  3 different ways in which the medical bills get paid 1. Private insurance programs­ insurance you pay for (mainly by employers) 2. Public insurance programs – Medicaid (low income) and Medicare (those over 65)  have to find doctors that will take this insurance though 3. HMO (health maintenance org) – medical care for a fixed fee. This organization  decides what was necessary for the patient or not, not the doctor
