Reading Quiz #2 Philosophy of Science b. The debates about the rules guiding a paradigm shows up in scientific practice when there is difficulty in deciding the rules that have guided particular normal-science traditions. Kuhn states that the difficulty is extremely similar to that of the one of the philosopher encounters when he tried to say what all games have in common. It is rooted in the nature of scientific education. He says that scientists don’t learn concepts, laws, and theories by themselves. They are learned from previous theories and expanded using scientific experiment. c. The difference between an oxygen theory of combustion and the phlogiston theorists’ account of combustion is that in the phlogiston theorists’ account of combustion, they believed that when what was actually burning when something went up in flames was phlogiston, a substance that they believed came out of the burning material as well. In the oxygen theory, they believed that oxygen from the air combusts and cause the material to burn even more. They believed that oxygen is what causes the material to burn.
