Cayla Mizrachi Philososphy of Science Response Paper 2 a. Neutrinos are hard to detect because they interacts very weakly. In order for something to be detected, it has to interact with the detector. Photons of light can be seen because the cones and rods cells in the retina absorb them. Glass is transparent because photons of light cannot be absorbed by glass. Neutrinos interact extremely weakly, making them hard to detect. In order to make sure of having a typical solar neutrino interaction, it would have to run through at least one light-year of lead. b. Ray Davis’ built a neutrino detector that consisted 378,000-liter tank of perchloroethylene that was submerged in water. The expectations were about the neutrino- chlorine interaction per day, but the measured solar neutrino events ended up being about only a third of that. c. It took so long to get the theory of solar neutrinos to match up with experiments designed to detect there neutrinos because the detection of the neutrinos was based on the interactions of neutrinos with chlorine nuclei to produce argon. It was very difficult for the argon to be produced so it took some time for the theory and experiments to match up.
