Date Created: 08/18/16
1. Date of Presentation: February 23, 2016 Title of Presentation: Exploring Physiology and Adaptation in Switchgrass 2. Presenter: Tom Juenger 3. Summary of Presentation: Through his research, Tom Jeunger is attempting to figure out whether we can discover the genes responsible for adaptation and its tolerance in the natural population, as well as what types of genetic changes are important for the evolution of stress tolerance and what the role of plastic responses is in local adaptation. He also is trying to answer whether we can link functional effects of natural alleles with an understanding of their evolutionary history. He chose the C4 grass Panicum virgatum, or more commonly known by its name switchgrass, for his studies because it is native to North America, contains polyploidy variation, has a long history in agronomic work, is productive on marginal lands, has high yields, and draft genome sequencing. His work will also allow him to understand the physiology differences between different types of switchgrass, and help him to determine if switchgrass can be a viable biofuel. 4. I chose to attend this presentation because I do not know a lot about plants and plant research, and it was very interesting to me to learn about how important plant research can be. I didn’t think about all of the positive outcomes that can be created through extensive research involving plants. 5. I learned about different questions that plant research can answer. I didn’t really think about how there can be variations of switchgrass based off of its geography, and that there are different local adaptations. As well, I learned about the specific implications of plastic or inducible responses.
