Measurement and Sig Figs

        Significant figures show how precisely a measurement has been determined

        •all #’s 1-9 are significant

        •Leading zeros are NEVER significant

        -ex: 0.00234 (3 s.f.)

            •Trapped zeros are ALWAYS significant

        -ex: 2002 (4 s.f) or 0.00203 (3 s.f)

            •Trailing zeros are significant if decimal is present

        -ex: 2000 (1 s.f.)

        -ex: 2000. (4 s.f.)

        •when multiplying and dividing round answer to the same # of sig fig as factor

With FEWEST sig figs

Example: (4.09 x 2.12)   /   (3.3) = 2.62751515…

                ↓          ↓            ↓

        3 sig figs   3 sig figs  2 sig figs

Final Answer = 2.6

✱ because 2 is the fewest # of sig figs in the equation so the answer also has to be 2 sig figs.

• Adding and Subtracting Sig Figs: 1st add vertically, shop off unknown info. Round to last known decimal place

Example: 15.0 + 0.00209 + 150.21

                  150.2  21209_

                165.21209        → =165.2

•Adding and Subtracting Sig Figs

                243.02  ?

•Scientific Notation

-2.14x10-2 =0.0214

-BIG#’s =positive exponents (102)

-small #’s =negative exponents (10-2)

How many atoms are in 10.0g Hg?

10.0g Hg| 6.02x1023 atoms Hg|

           |  200gHg

        10.0(6.02x1023) = 3.01x1022 atoms Hg
