background image Monday, August 29- Friday, September 2, 2016    Lauryn Daniel  Spanish 101 Notes:    Stress and Accents   If the word ends in a vowel, -n, or-s, you have to stress the next to last syllable.      Examples:  todo (to-do)    inteligente (in-te-li-gen-te)   examen (ex-a-men)  joven (jo-ven)  lunes (lu-nes)    calcetines (cal-ce-ti-nes)  If the word ends in a consonant (with the exception of –n and –s), the stress is applied to the  last syllable.     Examples:  comer (co-mer ciudad (ciu-dad)   animal (a-ni-mal Madrid (Ma-drid o  If the word does not follow the rules above, a written accent is used.    Examples:  canción (can-ción también (tam-bién Inglés (in-gles)   lápiz (la-piz)  o  Written accents are used in words that have a different meaning but are spelled the same.    Examples:  tu (your)  tú (you)  Si (if)    sí (yes)    Vocabulary   o  Adjectives                      Calvo(a)-bald
