Introduction to Anthropology 1102 Week 2 What is culture? The full range of learned human behavior patterns, 2 Layers “The Body” cultural traditions that distinguish your particular society “Subculture” people who migrate and retain much of their original cultural traditions Cultural Universals – learned behavior patterns that are shared by all of humanity collectively (age classifications, gender classifications, concept of privacy) Culture + Society While cultures are complexes of learned behavior patterns and perceptions, societies are groups of interacting organisms, Culture is created and transmitted to others in a society. Culture vs. Culture Learned Human Behavioral Patters Writing Movement through public space (Breech experiments) Food Preferences Pregnancy, birth and child rearing Anthropology and Holism The idea that all areas of life are interconnected Race and the Human Experience Race is real = ball of history, culture, identity and biology (has sociopolitical significance other than what has been tied to it) Is a social construct. Paradigm shift change in worldview (race caused shift in society) Race is a recent human invention Race is about culture and not about biology Race + Racism are embedded in institutions and everyday life Race was invented as a way to categorize + rank + define others as extensions Belief in separate + unequal races, only justification for inhuman colonization and slavery Race is an idea + product of culture Human Biological Variation is real. Variety is a required ingredient for the survival of the human race. Race does not explain human variation. Race is both stable and protean (tending to change frequently, easily) Morphs depending on place and time We own the future of race. RACE is everywhere. Emerged from Western European colonial th expansion in the 15 century Americas. Race = political entities resulting from social actions, use to define and influence human diversity.
