symbols according to grammatical rules
Language is made up of two primary units: o Morphemes: smallest language units that have  meaning including suffixes and prefixes o Phonemes: basic sounds of speech, making them  building blocks of language; letters Syntax and Semantics o Syntax: rules of speaking, without syntax our  communication would fall apart o Semantics: meaning of words and phrases Saying ma’am in the south is respectable but 
saying it up north refers to an old woman
4,000 languages in the world Language and the Brain Broca’s area and Wernicke’s Area o Broca’s- production of speech
o Wernicke’s- understanding speech
Aphasia: a language disorder that results in deficits in 
language comprehension and production
o About 40 percent of all strokes produce some aphasia,  which can be temporary or permanent Language in Infancy Start talking about a year Phrases about 1.5 – 2 years Sentences about 3 years At teens you know about 15,000 words
