The sky varies as Earth orbits the sun

  • As earth orbits the sun, the sun appears to move eastward along the ecliptic.
  • At midnight, the stars on our meridian are opposite the sun in the sky.

Earth's axis points in the same direction all year round 10 polaris, so its orientation relative to the sun changes as Earth orbits the sun. Don't forget about the age old question of What theory suggests that elements are composed of small particles called atoms?

Summer occurs in your hemisphere when sunlight is less direct If you want to learn more check out What is the term used for ionic compounds that do not exist as discrete molecules?
We also discuss several other topics like What is an independent linear system?

Axis Tilt is the key to the season; without it, we would not have season on earth.

Special Points

        Summer solstice (June)

Winter solstice (December)We also discuss several other topics like learninsuite

        Spring Equinox (March)

        Fall Equinox (September)

Summer Solstice: Highest path; rise and set at most extreme north of due east.We also discuss several other topics like What is a Baloney Detection Kit used for?

Winter solstice: lowest path; rise and set at most extreme south of due east.

Equinoxes: sun rises precisely due east and sets precisely due west.

What causes seasons?

  • The tilt of the earth’s axis causes sunlight to hit in different parts of the earth more directly during summer and less directly in winter.
  • We can specify the position of an object in the local sky by its altitude above the horizon and its direction along the horizon.
  • The summer and winter solstices are when the northern hemisphere gets its most and least direct sunlight. The spring and fall equinoxes are when both hemispheres get equally direct sunlight.

Earth has a 26,000 year precession cycle that slowly and subtly changes the orientation of Earth’s axis. Precession - a gradual wobble that alters the orientation of Earth’s axis in space.

Phases of the Moon

The moon orbits the Earth 27.3 days.

Half of the moon is illuminated and half is dark.

We see a changing combination of the bright and dark faces as moon orbits.

Waxing

  • Moon is visible in afternoon or evening
  • Gets fuller and rises later each day

Wanin

  • Moon visible in late night or morning
  • Gets less full and sets later each day

Moon rotates once with each orbit. Which is why only one side is visible from Earth.

Eclipse

  • The earth and moon cast shadows
  • When either passes through the other’s shadow, we have an eclipse

Lunar eclipse can occur only at full moon. They can be penumbral, partial, or total.

Solar eclipse can only occur on a new moon. Can be partial, total, or annular.

Nodes - moon must be at or near one of the two points in its orbit where it crosses the ecliptic plane.
