How blacks came to English colonies: in 1619 in Jamestown in august a ship was full with enslaved African americans
Anthony Johnson: he was black and arrived in 1620 to jamestown and formed a bond with his owner and earned his own way to his freedom and the owner gave him some land. He prospered and owned a 250 acres tobacco farm and had an African amercian slave and white indentured servants. After death his family received his land. This point on slavery was based on race (blacks).
The Middle Passage: ship that transported slaves and death was so common that sharks followed ships. When coming to shore the slaves were rubbed with oil to look better and to hide the wounds. Priscilla was on this ship and got to Charleston South Carolina and there were more enslaved blacks than white people. Priscilla was purchased in 1756 and she was 10 years old, came has an orphan, no language, no home. She worked on rice and the swamp which was filled with snakes and the air with malaria mosquitos. Lots of people died in their first year there but Priscilla beat the odds. She had her own family and her family tree kept growing and it was extremely rare.

St Agustina is in south Florida and is the oldest place in the united states run by Spanish people. Slaves could come here and become free if they served in colonial military and converted to catholism. Spanish and English were at war. Spanish people started building slaves homes and it became first allblack settlement called fort mose. Fort Mose: a few miles north of St. Augustine as an allblack settlement built by the Spanish people. It was the “promise land” so many begin to run here and began to get caught by the British.
Stomo Rebellion: The Stono Rebellion (sometimes called Cato's Conspiracy or Cato's Rebellion) was a slave rebellion that began on 9 September 1739, in the colony of South Carolina. It was the largest slave uprising in the British mainland colonies, with 4247 whites and 44 blacks killed. The blacks were trying to escape to st Augustine so they could be free. They got caught by the militia at the Edisto river and this created the negro act of 1740 which restricted slave assembly, education, and movement.

Harry Washington: joined the black pioneers. Lots of slaves ran here. Most of these black loyalist died in the war. One of the lucky few and British put him on a ship and shipped him to Canada. He made his way back to Africa because he wanted his freedom
Sierra Leone: an island in south Africa. was major hub for the slave trade. People were taken from this place to the new world. Africans practiced slavery based on power and ethnic differences and would do it with other blacks and haven’t even seen a white person. For example: if one black person had power over another black person then the black person with power would get to own him as a slaves. Germans: 1900’s came to colonial north America prior to the revolution and became largest ethnic group. Germany was divided by 16 sub colonies. Changed their religion from catholic to protestant. Migration of Germans went to Russia and Hungary. They left because they were seeking more freedom and then started to arrive in north America. They tend to travel in family groups like puritans. A lot of these migrants went into debt from traveling and so lots of them were poor. Germans usually settle in the westward back like New York, north Carolina, Georgia. They settled with people who practiced same religion as them or with other Germans because they wanted to keep their German beliefs alive. They did believe in having slaves and were selfsustaining farmers to feed their families. They grew their own food. By 1740 Benjamin franklin were scared that Germans would take over Pennsylvania. Germans were a religious diverse group of people. They were not involved in politics. They had absence of military draft in the colonies. The Great Awakening: not a national movement but 1730’s was a wave of a revival. They experiment with a more emotional and preaching style. Were given a different approach to Christianity. This was a direct challenge to puritan ideas, your eternal fate was brought upon you from birth.
Impressment: enforcement of military or naval service by compulsion, without notice.
Republicanism: active participation in public life by economically independent citizens under people who had popular sovereignty. Profitable owned men could vote is what they believed.
Liberalism: middle path between conservatism (king) and radicalism. Unlike republican’s liberalism did not emphasize ones responsibilities to their state.
John Locke: here was a liberal. Started to write in the 1680’s but his ideas were embraced in 1700’s. think government was formed by a mutual agreement between the people and the government. People came together under a social contract that they would give up something like to kill people in order to live under the laws of the government. He believed that Individuals have certain rights of life liberty and property and should be free of the interference from the government like religious, economic practice. He argued for the right of women to divorce. Voting was for property owning men but blacks who owned land could not vote. If you don’t own property, are black or a women u can’t vote.
Salutary neglect: colonies were left to govern themselves in the 1700’s because England was busy fighting France all over the world. Refers to the brinish crown policy of avoiding strict enforcement of parliamentary and meant to keep American colonies obedient to England
John Peter Zenger: printer and journalism whose famous acquittal in a libel suit established important victory of freedom of the press in English colonies in north America. The assembly order his paper to be burned and he was arrested and put on trial. At trial the jury questioned if he was guilty of libel. Was self educated.
The Junto: found by Benjamin. 1727 these people found the first library in Philadelphia and the night watchmen to reduce crime in the evenings. Town full of coffee stands and would gather to talk about political and religious stuff. Freedom of the press did not exist.
