GRAMMAR STUDY SHEET Nouns: names a person, place or thing Pronouns: a word that takes the place of a noun (its/more/who/somebody) The word that was replaced is called the ANTECEDENT Personal pronouns: I/me/you/he/him/she/her/they/them/it Demonstrative pronouns: They point something out (that/these/this/those) Interrogative pronouns: introduce questions (who/whom/which/whose/what) Indefinite pronouns: don’t refer to anyone/thing specific (anybody/everyone/everything) Relative pronouns: connect clauses Reciprocal pronouns: each other/one another Intensive and Reflexive pronouns: Intensive when they emphasize the subject; reflexive when they have –self or –selves used as objects. Articles: A, AN, and THE Adjectives: words that describe nouns or pronouns Predicate adjectives: an adjective in the complete predicate that describes the subject Predicate nominatives: a subject linked by a verb to a noun or pronoun Verbs: can be ‘being’ or ‘stative’ Verb phrases: when a helping verb (the 23) is attached to another verb (can help/will see) Irregular verbs: they from past and past participles Transitive and Intransitive verbs: Transitive: action is done TO something; intransitive: object RECEIVES action Adverbs: words that describe verbs or adjectives (sometimes they end in – ly); they can also describe other adverbs; how something is done. e.g. ‘joyously’, ‘gladly’, ‘surreptitiously’ Conjunctive Adverbs: connect ideas and show relationships: likewise/otherwise/therefore Conjunctions: connect words, phrases, or clauses Coordinating conjunctions: and, or, but, nor, for, so and yet Correlative conjunctions: either/or, neither/nor, both/and Prepositions: during/until/in – anything a squirrel can do to a nut in a tree Prepositional phrase: a group of words beginning with a preposition and ending with a noun or pronoun Object of the preposition: the noun or pronoun at the end of the prepositional phrase The most commonly overlooked prepositions are like and but. Transitional phrases: as a result/even so/in fact/for instance Interjections: No way/hello/goodbye/congratulations
