background image Nutrition:  Key Notes:  Protein is used to develop and repair bone, muscle, skin and blood cells
and is found as a nutrient through the food you consume. 
o Amino acids that contain nitrogen are the “building blocks” of  proteins  o Complete proteins are those that contain all nine essential amino  acids.  The RDA stands for the recommended average daily intake of a certain
nutrient at a level considered healthy. 
o The recommended daily amount of fiber consumption for adults is 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men.  Fiber protects against obesity, colon, rectal cancers, and 
heart disease. 
o About 50-70 percent of an adult’s body weight is water.  Calcium mainly comes from milk, dairy products, and specific green 
vegetable and is needed for your body to maintain health. 
Vitamin D is fat-soluble but can also produce negative side effects if in 
excess.
o A vitamin D deficiency can increase the risk for osteoporosis,  breast and prostate cancer, and heart disease and stroke.  o Fat-soluble vitamins are not good in large amounts because they  cannot be excreted in urine and could build up in the liver.  HDL is a cholesterol that transports cholesterol to the liver 
for removal. 
o The consumption of a lot of trans fatty acids could lead to a  higher risk of coronary heart disease.  o Triglycerides make up 95% of total body fat.  The body converts glucose into energy.  Antioxidants produce enzymes, a type of protein that can destroy free 
radicals. 
Healthful diets should not be calorie-dense because too much calories 
do not allow the body to function in a healthy manner. 
Functional foods are foods that provide more health benefits than 
those that just provide basic nutrition. 
o The best way to obtain all the nutrients necessary is to eat a  variety of foods.  MyPlate plan should not include full-fat dairy products due to their 
tendency to be unhealthy for the body. 
Appetite is defined as the psychological desire for food.
