background image Art & Memorials (cont’d)
9/11
Blue beams show twin towers.
Is once a year. But it lacks visibility (has to be seen in the night). And it does not
recognize the lives lost (all it shows us is the buildings).
Figure 4.7.16_Reflecting Absense_9/11 Memorial, New York_Michael
Arad and Peer Walker
Memorial pools framed by bronze panels (with list of names from first
responders).
The trees are there to separate this site from the rest of the city and
also to symbolize life, strength, and resilience.
Dark colors. Names are placed on panels based on “meaningful adjacentcy”:
o
North or South Tower. o Who worked together. o Which families asked for a specific spot. It is almost like a cut out of the ground (like Miah Lin’s). Water serves to make it more peaceful, drowning out the noise of the
streets and people.
1.2_Form, Volume, Mass, and Texture
3D works of art
Have height, width, and depth. Form
A 2D object is a shape; a 3D object is called a form. Have two basic attributes. Figure 3.1.14_Pyramids at Giza_pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure.
Geometric form
3D form composed of regular plans and curves. Figure 1.2.4_Roettgen Pieta (Verperbild)_1330
Organic form
As opposed to geometric form; the form of most things in the natural
world.
Purpose is for the viewer to relate to Mary, because she is usually the
most important figure, and to empathize with her loss.
There is a disproportion of bodysize
Their faces are long and disproportionally large to the rest of their
bodies.
A grown man would not be able to sit on his mother’s lap. The limpness and wounds are exaggerated.
o
His head would not be able to lean back that far. Mary’s facial expression is exhaust, confused, disgusted
