8. Multiply the “Overall Adjusted Rate” and the crude population rate by the appropriate rate base
Indirect Standardization: 7 steps 1. Determine which group is the “reference population” (hint: the larger one) and which groups are the “samples” or
“comparison” groups (hint: the smaller ones)
2. Calculate the rate of an event for each age category for the reference population 3. Expected Cases­ Multiply each age­specific rate for the reference population by the number of people in each age
category for each comparison population, round to nearest whole number.
4. Total Expected Cases for each Comparison Population­ Add up the “Expected Cases” for each comparison group 5. Total Observed Cases for each Comparison Population­ Add up the number of events for all age categories for
each comparison group
6. Overall Adjusted Rate: Divide total Expected Cases by the total Observed Cases/Events for each comparison
group Calculate the overall crude rate for the reference population
7. Determine the Rate Difference for each comparison group for interpretation How do we choose which rates to use? Crude no comparison b/c we are looking at one group/population Specific rate is confounded by another variable such a age, state, or any other demographic variables Adjusted rate  impacted by another variable
it's just for comparison purposes and as a result, it does not accurately depict the experience of that
population   Direct: if all data is present
Indirect: missing data or unusually small sample sizes
Probability ­ Events 2 types of Probability Subjective: personal conception of the likelihood of an event based on previous observation or experience Objective: likelihood of an event based on repeated experiments/measurements 2  theories of probability Bayesian: Probability statistics that involve prior beliefs or data as part of the calculations
