background image SWK 370 9-14-16  Evidence-based practice (EBP)  1.  Cycle of EBP  a.  Evidence-based research
b.  Client preferences and actions
c.  Client state and circumstances
d.  Practitioner’s expertise
2.  Why is EBP controversial?  a.  It’s not always practical
b.  Some interventions have enough evidence that we consider them EB
c.  However, people are unique and their circumstances are individual. You have to take
these things into consideration, you can’t just operate on evidence  3.  Controversies and misconceptions  a.  For simplicity, ease, and feasibility, research studies don’t usually recruit the hardest  clients  i.  Some clients have severe symptoms, are in crisis, are hard to follow up with,  have co-occurring disorders, etc. These clients likely won’t participate in a
research study
ii.  Underrepresentation of racial and ethnic minorities   b.  Overly restrictive, denigrates professional expertise, ignore client’s values and  preferences  c.  These critiques are legit, but EBP is also very worthwhile
d.  The therapeutic alliance will be hindered
i.  The connection is usually most important  ii.  Sometimes EBP can be manualized (not necessarily a good thing)  e.  EBP is merely a cost-cutting tool  i.  Using EBP will yield better coverage from insurance companies  f.  Evidence is in short supply  i.  TRUE  ii.  Not a critique as much as a reason for more research  1.  Lack of representation is an issue  g.  Real-world obstacles prevent implementing EBP in everyday practice  i.  Most problematic controversy  4.  Check out samhsa.gov/nrepp for statistics and EBP
