[Permutations] Fundamental Counting Principal: How many outcomes you can get. Ex. You have a choice of 5 shirts (blue, pink, purple, green & red), 6 pants (black, grey, blue, green, red, & pink), and 4 pairs of shoes (blue, black, red, & green) to wear today. How many outfits can you create? 5 x 6 x 4 = 120 There's 120 outfits you can make today. Ex. You need to design your own license plate. The pattern is 3 letters, and 2 numbers. Keep in mind that there are 26 letters in the alphabet, and you can use any number 0-9, making 10 number choices. You can repeat all letters and numbers. 26 x 26 x 26 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 17,576,000. There's 17,576,000 ways you can design the license plate. Permutations: Permutations: order matters & there's no repetitions. Formula: __N!___ (n-r)! != factorial Ex. If 5 people are joining a club, and you need a president, vice president, and a secretary, how many ways can the offices be filled? 5P 3= 5! 5! 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = (5-3) 2! 2 x 1 = Since 2 and 1 are on both top and bottom of the problem, they cancel each other out. Now you only need to multiply the numbers that are left. 5x4x3=60 So, the answer is 60. **** to check your answer on your calculator enter the total number of items you have. In the above question we had 5 total people. So, enter 5 into your calculator. Now, find the probability button. Select nPr. Now enter the total number of people we are looking for. Since you are filling 3 positions, enter 3. Now just hit enter. You get 60. **** 2
