GEOGRAPHY 363V – CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY EXAM #2 STUDY GUIDE Definitions: You will be asked to define and give examples. I will choose the 15 for the exam. Worth 3 points each. (Definitions worth a total of 45 points) Nation (define and give two examples) A culture/Ethnic Group. Two examples are Native American nations, and the European nations such as Basques. NationState (define and give two exampl)A State made up of one Nation. Two examples are Iceland, Denmark, South Korea, and some Pacific Island countries. Separatism (define and give three traits) when a nation wants independence from a state. One Trait is the nation wants a state of their own. Another Trait is Economic and political inequality. The other trait is a belief that your not free. Consequent Political Boundary (define and give one example) Boundary created considering culture. One example India: Bangladesh and Pakistan created to separate Muslims from Hindus. Superimposed Political Boundary (define and give one example ignore culture. One Example is the Soviet Union taking over Georgia and setting boundaries Functional Boundary Dispute (define and give one example) An attempt to resolve dispute over immigration, trade, tariffs/taxes, drug smuggling, environmental laws. One example would be the NAFTA – U.S./Mexico/Canada Resource Boundary Dispute (define and give one example) disputes over natural resources that happens at the boundary or in it. One example would be Canada and U.S fighting over the Georges Bank fishing grounds. Falkland Islands War Argentina invades islands part of United Kingdom in 1982. A remnant of British Empire. Exclusive Economic Zone A war over fishing rights, oil, gas, undersea minerals, and pride. Brown Colonialism (define and give one example) Former colonized “nations” become dictators over other nations. One example would be Brown or Black skinned people start acting like their former European oppressors. Ethnocide (define and give two ways it is done) The killing of culture. One ways it is done is by suppress culture by forbidding, language, religion, clothing, food. Another way it is done is by destroying an environment by rainforest destruction. First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Worlds (be able to define each of these and give an example of a country/group in each “world”) First world Developed democracies. An example of a country would be the U.S Second World Communist Countries. An example would be Cuba. Third World Developing World. One example would be India Fourth World Nations indigenous groups worldwide. One example would be Kurds. Fifth World Refugees One example would be Palestinians and Iraqis in Jordan 1917 Balfour Declaration A letter that Balfour wrote to Rothschild thanking him for the help for a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Zionism Belief held by some Jews that God promised them a homeland in the Middle East 1967 War in Israel It was a six day war. Israel was attacked by Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. Israel won the war. Occupied Territories: which countries did Israel claim them from? Which ones have been returned to which countries/groups? What do you think the outcome will be to this conflict? One Short Essay: Prepare to write a factual and thoughtful essay for this exact question (Worth 35 points) 1) Draw and briefly explain the “Shape of War” in EITHER Indonesia OR Nicaragua. Be sure to use terms such as nation, state, separatism, and brown colonialism. Be factual and specific.
