Costume Quiz Study Guide Quiz on 9/30/2016 By Deryn Susman ● Costumes can represent: ○ Social status, time period, occupation, age, etc. ● Two practical considerations for costume designer: ○ Size of actor, budget ● Places to get modern costumes: ○ Consignment shop, Goodwill, Department store, online ● Places to get “period” costumes ○ Rental, make it ● Fabric swatches are attached to the costume sketch ○ Costume sketches are the best way to convey the design of a costume ● Presentation methods for costume design ○ Sketches, books, collages, actual clothing ● Ways a costume list is useful: ○ Which characters are in a scene, what they are wearing, the movement anticipated ● Things to include on a costume sketch: ○ Name of character, name of show, fabric ● Costume Croquis: ○ A rough outline of a model that acts as a template for a model ● Role of the Wardrobe Supervisor ○ Take care of maintenance, supervise wardrobe crew ● Role of the Cutter/Draper ○ Take a sketch and create a pattern and/or drape the fabric on a mannequin ● Commonly used natural fabrics and characteristics ○ Cotton-cost efficient, easy to dye, easy to use, easy to clean, shrinks and stretches, wrinkles ○ Silk: strong, hot, not machine washable, not stretchy ○ Wool: hot, not machine washable, durable, dyes easily ● Commonly used artificial fabrics and characteristics ○ Polyester: Strong, resistant to stretching and shrinking, wrinkle resistant, easy to wash ○ Nylon: abrasion resistant, high elongation, durable, melts not burns ○ Spandex: stretchy, lightweight, poor strength, good for dancing ● How can a costume draw attention to something specific in a costume? ○ Color, pattern, contrast, shape, etc. ● Costume (n.): ​a set of clothes in the style of a particular country or historical period ​as relates to the overall concept, style, and characterization
