background image Attention We think we pay attention but we actually miss a lot of information Teachers that show videos, promote discussion and in class activities
provide a more engaging classroom provide a more engaging
classroom because students are interacting with the teacher and with
each other
Our attention span is only 10-15 minutes If you sit in a lecture that is 50 or 75 minutes long you will lose focus.
Engaging lectures allow you to divide your attention and not zone out
Attention: behavioral process of allocating limited processing resources
o Key point is limited!!!!!!
Three kinds (that we are concerned with) o Sustained: remain attentive over time (hard to do)
o Selective: only choosing one thing to focus on
o Divided: splitting your attention, multitasking
Change Blindness The “Door Study”: a man asked someone for directions and then two
people holding a door walked in between the two men.  While they
were walking through the person who asked for directions switched
with one of the men holding the door.  The man who was giving
directions did not notice about 50% of the time
This show us that we really do not pay that much attention.  This could
potentially be dangerous, while we walk most people look at their
phones and someone could just come up and snatch away our phones
or pocketbooks since we do not see them approach us
Memory and Attention You don’t remember what you don’t attend to! What if we are trying to pay attention? o Too many stimuli/ less stimuli
o Not switching up studying
o Cell phones/laptops/TV
o Think you already know topic
o Sleep deprivation
o Stress
o Depression/anxiety
Mood affects attention the most Amnesia: lose period of time, problem retrieving information from long
term memory
Causes: severe psychological problems, brain damage, infection Absent mindness: dividing our attention too much Causes: don’t allocate enough resources to process all of the  information
