PSY 381Human Sexuality Second Test Studv Guide Because the test will be computer scored you must bring a number 2 pencil and eraser There are 69 four or five choice multiplechoice questions on the second test Even though some of the material was covered in both the textbook and the class m was covered only in class and some only in the textbook You will need to check and know both the material in the textbook and the notes from the class Also even though many items on the test are based only on recognition memory there are some items that require understanding or application of ideas Below is a list of topics that may be on the test Anything not on the list will not be on the test SEXUAL RESPONSE 1 Know the general nature of Masters and Johnson39s model 2 Know the Masters and Johnson39s model very well its 4 stages in order and recognize the speci c details of what occurs in each stage in men and in women Four stages in order Excitement Plateau Orgasm and Resolution 1 Excitement The basic physiological process that occurs during excitement is vasocongestion This produces the obvious arousal response in males erection Women lubrication of the vagina Although this response might seem much different from the male s actually they both result from the same physiological process vasocongestion During excitement the capillaries in the walls of the vagina dilate and blood ow through them increases During the excitement phase the glans of the clitoris the tip swells This swelling results from engorgement of its corpora cavernosa and is similar to erection in the male The clitoris can be felt as larger and harder than usual The crura of the clitoris lying deeper in the body also swell as a result of vasocongestion The vestibular bulbs which lie along the wall of the vagina are also erectile and swell during the excitement phase Breasts During excitement the nipples become erect this response results from contractions of the muscle fibers myotonia surrounding the nipple the breasts themselves swell and enlarge somewhat in the late part of the excitement phase a vasocongestion response The nipples may not actually look erect but may appear somewhat latter against the breast because the breast has swollen Many males also have nipple erection during the excitement phase During the excitement phase the upper two thirds of the vagina expands dramatically in what is often called a ballooning response In other words it becomes more like an in ated balloon This ballooning helps accommodate the entrance of the penis As part of the ballooning the cervix and uterus also pull up During excitement a sex ush may appear on the skin of both men and women though more commonly of women the sex ush resembles a measles rash it often begins on the upper abdomen and spreads over the chest It may also appear later in the sexual response cycle Pulse rate breathing rate and blood pressure also increase in both men and women In men the skin of the scrotum thickens The scrotal sac tenses and the scrotum is pulled up and closer to the body The spermatic cords shorten pulling the testes closer to the body 2 Plateau Testis are right next to the body glands red color prostate gland is larger blue balls Women uterus is elevated walls separated and lubricate vagina becomes accommodating the innermost part of the vagina expands 3 Orgasm In males orgasm consists of a series of rhythmic contractions of the pelvic organs Male orgasm occurs in two stages In the preliminary stage the vas seminal vesicles and prostate contract forcing the ejaculate into a bulb at the base of the urethra Masters and Johnson call the sensation in this stage one of ejaculatory inevitability coming In other words there is a sensation that ejaculation is just about to happen and cannot be stopped And indeed it cannot be once the man has reached this point In the second stage the urethral bulb and the penis itself contract rhythmically forcing the semen through the urethra and out the opening at the tip of the penis In males and females pulse rate blood pressure and breathing rate increase sharply during orgasm Muscles contract throughout the body Resolution The first change in women is a reduction in the swelling of the breasts In the 5 to 10 seconds after the end of the orgasm the clitoris returns to its normal position although it takes longer for it to shrink to its normal size h e orgasmic platform relaxes and begins to shrink h e ballooning of the vagina diminishes and the uterus shrinks In both males and females resolution brings a gradual return of pulse rate blood pressure and breathing rate to the unaroused levels In men the most obvious occurrence in the resolution phase is detumescence the loss of erection in the penis Detumescence happens in two stages The first occurs rapidly but leaves the penis still enlarged It s loss of erection results from an emptying of the corpora cavernosa The second stage occurs more slowly as a result of the slower emptying of the corpus spongiosum and the glans During the resolution phase men enter a refractory period during which they are refractory to further arousal In other words they are incapable of being aroused again having an erection or having an orgasm The length of this refractory period varies Women do not have a refractory period 3 What are vasocongestioin and myotonia and how do they relate to Masters and Johnson39s model Vasocongestion occurs when a great deal of blood ows into the blood vessels in a region in this case the genitals as a result of dilation of the blood vessels in the region Myotonia occurs when muscles contract not only in the genitals but also throughout the body These occur during the excitement and orgasm stage 5 What do many women typically experience when they have an orgasm The main feeling is a spreading sensation that begins around the clitoris and then spreads out ward through the whole pelvis h ere may also be sensations of falling or opening up h e woman may be able to feel the contraction of the muscles around the vaginal entrance h e sensation is more intense than just a warm glow or a pleasant tingling In one study college men and women gave written descriptions of what an orgasm felt like to them Vance amp Wagner 1976 Interestingly a panel of experts medical students obstetrician gynecologists and clinical psychologists could not reliably figure out which of the descriptions were written by women and which by men this result suggests that the sensations are quite similar for males and females 6 So what39s up with vaginal and clitoral orgasms According to the results of Masters and Johnson s research though there is no difference between clitoral and vaginal orgasms h is conclusion is based on two findings First their results indicate that all female orgasms are physiologically the same regardless of the site of stimulation An orgasm always consists of contractions of the orgasmic platform whether the stimulation is clitoral or vaginal 7 What is known about female ejaculation Ej aculate contains acid and comes out of urethra from the skenes gland Occurs only with stimulation of the Gspot but proven not true May also occur from stimulation of clitoris 8 What female organ is now usually considered to be responsible for the Gspot and to what male organ Is it considered homologous Skenes Gland for female Prostate Gland for male Considered homologous 9 What happens with women and what happens with men when they have multiple orgasms Stay at plateau level in between orgasms les then a minute apart Men refractory period Women able to have multiple orgasms one after another 10 What are the limitations and criticisms of Masters and Johnson39s model 0 Limitations Ignored psychosocial phenomenon Participants had to be orgasmic Mechanistic If you do not follow 4 phases you are not sexual 0 Criticisms Decided to study physiology only they were a physician and a biologist so that s what they knew techniques for studying psychosocialemotional responses were not well developed at the time of their studies later work demonstrated they were aware of the importance of emotional and interpersonal factors Orgasmic people only they wanted to study sexual response so they needed people who responded well sexually they believed they were studying a basic process that would work the same in all people Did not allow for variation from their mechanistic 4 phases yes they did see slide 4 11 Know the components in order of Kaplan39s model and how they compare and contrast with those of Masters and Johnson39s model Triphasic Model sexual desire Excitement vasocongestion of the genitals and myotonia Resolution release amp reversal Comparison to Masters and Johnson Model Kaplan s recreation of the sexual response model is unique thanks to the implementation of the desire phase This stage had initially gone unrecognized and ignored but Kaplan realized the necessity for this aspect of the overall stage The desire stage is basically the psychological prephysical sexual response stage It had most likely gone ignored before because most probably felt that sexual responses only occurred with physical activity This isn t the case because sexual desire is not always present during sexual activity and Kaplan understood this concept An example of this would be a partner engaging in sexual activity just to satisfy their partner although they themselves may not feel a desire to do so This phase is without question an important aspect of the Triphasic model which is the reenergized model of the basic cycle of sexual response 12 Know and understand the phases in order of Reed39s model and how they compare and contrast with those of Masters and Johnson39s model Based on Psychological and Cognitive Stages of sexual response Seduction desire and early excitement person gives permission to themselves to be thinking about sex Thinking about your partner and intimacy with the other person Sensation excitement and plateau phase Focusing on pleasurable feelings Thinking about how pleasant all these things feels More sensory sensitivity A lot of emotional closeness to the person you are with Time distortion Surrender orgasm Totally let go All we are feeling are sexually feelings Re ection corresponds to resolution Thinking about what has just happened and the feelings associated with it person gets some kind of meaning of the activity How do they compare and contrast with Masters and J ohnsons model 13 What is the basic paradigm behind Walen and Roth39s model What is its basic process Cognitive Paradigm Basic Process is information processing perception and evaluation feedback Steps Process Perception of sexual stimulus Positive evaluation choose right person right place right time Arousal Perception of arousal Leads to positive evaluation feedback Allows you to engage in sexual behavior Perception of behavior Positive evaluation again 14 What types of motivation are there for sexual interactions according to Basson39s model What is unique about Basson s model Sexual Hunger and Intimacy Only model that Directly states people have sex just for intimacy Only model that directly states that men are this way females are that way Women who are having sex for intimacy engage in sex behave and get some degree of arousal after arousal commit to the idea of having sex Females require much more sexual intimacy before reaching sexual desire 15 Understand Bancroft s distinction between excitatory and inhibitory processes Two basic processes underlie sexual response excitation amp inhibition helps to understand risky sexual behavior and sexual disorders early learning and culture critical in determining which stimuli will exciting or cause inhibition 0 Interpretation and decisions regarding sex are an integration of two separate processes People vary in their predisposition to these processes amp these propensities are independent These processes result from genetics early learning Excitatory Evolutionarily makes sense when it comes to Making babies Inhibitory Evolutionarily there are some situations in which Being sexual might be unsafe and if you engage in Sexual behavior you might get damaged or die and therefore cannot reproduce Sometimes a species might become Overpopulated and sometimes the population will Die out because there is too many of that species and they eat up all the food sources Sometimes the species will cease to have sex as often This is an inhibitory process that will be evolutionarily adapted This model provides answers to some puzzling phenomena Men tend to want to have sex more and women only in certain situations This is because women have more Inhibitory than men who have the excitatory Both men and women have both Excitatory reproduce for evolution Inhibitory less obvious but some reason do exist eating and drinking are necessary Men wanting to impregnate a women by regulating sperm count 16 Remember that Walen and Roth39s model and Basson39s model directly include feedback whereas Masters and Johnson39s and Kaplan39s do not Reed39s does so indirectly 17 What hormone contributes to sexual desire in both men and women Testosterone ATTRACTION LOVE AND INTIMATE RELATIONSHIPS 1 Know and recognize the effects of propinquity physical attractiveness arousal sex history similarity success and wealth and playing hardtoget on interpersonal attraction Should women play hard to get She should show them nonverbally unequivocally that she likes him AND that she has no desires for anybody else How does she tell him nonverbally that she likes him Touch Eye contact Use activities like dancing to show off your sexual attributes Arousal the physiology of our arousal is slightly different from one thing to another But only slightly Essentially it s the same But its easy to confuse one arousal for another Arousal exaggerates our feelings for the other In general increases the liking But if we dislike someone it will decrease that feeling more So the arousal essentially increases whichever feeling we have to start Those similar to us as a total package we are attracted to Women like security success and wealth 2 Know about pheromones and the vomeronasal organ in mammals generally and in humans Pheromones is a secreted or excreted chemical factor that triggers a social response in members of the same species not part of our general sense of smell Mammals have these to mark territory and announce their sexual attraction Pheromones cause mentrosychrony All mammals have a VNO But only about 85 of humans have VNO s VNO is a pheromone Female pheromones might come from vaginas 3 What is the effect of arousal on liking The more you like someone the higher you your arousal If you dislike someone arousal increases your dislike Arousal enhances the initial emotion 4 Understand the importance of similarity and complementarity in attraction Similarity in terms of background race religion etc the only thing that doesn t seem to matter is personality Complementarity If I like sports and you like music some may think they compliment each other But it does not work Opposites in personality do not work Complementarity does not work 5 Understand and distinguish exchange and communal relationships Exchange relationships like business transitions Equity theory outcomesinputs the things I bring to the relationship Put them together And if our ratios the same I m in a positive relationship If they are not I am unhappy and I will work to make them the same If my ratio is better than the other my unhappiness turns into anxiety People are happiest if two ratios are the same If one isn t matching the other they will work hard to fix it Equality theory Much simpler Same concept but looking at rewards rather than outputsinputs Communal Relationships very rare Equityequality is irrelevant When I do something I won t expect anything back EVER Many people don t have any of these But some may only have a few The most common example is a motherchild relationship Very few but some romantic relationships are communal 6 What does mutuality mean What creates intimacy Mutuality weness If someone says what are you doing this weekend And you say we are going to a club If you think and talk of yourself and your partner as a single unit And you know everything about each other Intimacy sexual emotionalshared emotions with someone we don t normally share with others Intellectual working and developing intellectually personal facts information we allow them to know about us shared experiences literal meaning ex War buddies The key to intimacy is self disclosure in any of these The more emotions you show the other personself disclosure Sex is also selfdisclosure We get intimate in a broad range or our lives If we break up often they are very nasty Usually to hurt the other person When we form relationships intimacy is reciprocated and gradual Gradual supportive reciprocation a successful relationship We get very uncomfortable if we get very intimate in one way causing us to be much more vulnerable and defensive Other ways of intimacy Touching Eye contact 7 Know Fisher39s theory of love very well Three components of love that apply to all human beings regardless of anything Lust gee I d like to mate I need to find a mate involves the hypothalamus and amygdala Attractionromantic love when talking about mammals attraction Romantic love homosapiens focuses on one person obsessive cannot stop thinking about them this person takes on special meaning Focus on the things we like about the other very intensehot feels like a fever related to infatuation but not exactly infatuations mediated by a chemical called phyenylethylamine Romantic love is increased dopamine norepinephrine and decreased serotonin serotonin keeps calm and balance other psychologists call this passionate love says this is not an emotion but only motivation the emotion is how we feel when the other person responds to us if response is positive then we feel ecstasy tough on the body and psyche this never lasts more than three years reason being because that is enough time to make a baby Attachment In psychology we call it companionate love this is tolerance for long term companionship a sense of security peace and contentment involves oxytocin cuddlingbonding some dopamine If you leave out obsession items passionate love can go well past three years Retrosplenial cortex increases with time also tells us when we ve had enough chocolate Singulate cortex also correlated with slowly deteriorating passionate love A love a mother has for her child vs mothers love for her lover Through study and brain scans it is shows that both are different and also share some similarities 9 Recognize the different styles of love What prediction does the Storagefriendship don t fall in love right away develop a friendship first then maybe it will turn into love tend to have relationship to develop more slowly a lot of warmth and sharing 9 The majority of people are not just one of these usually they are made of the blending of about two or three Hope to find that your partner and yourself are the same styles Order does not matter as long as you re
