Interview Plan Interviewer: Garrett Buschman Interviewee:  Interviewee  Purpose: Learn about what influenced her job choice, the specifics of her job, and how  communication plays a role. I. Introduction a. I will greet her with a hand shake, and a hello. Thank you for taking time out of  your busy schedule to meet with me. My name is Garrett Buschman and as I  mentioned beforehand I am a first year college student conducting this interview  for a class project where I aim to find out a bit about how communication affects  your job. Transition: First I want to talk a bit about how you got started and interested in  your field. II. Body a. Education i. Where did you attend university? ii. Why did u choose to go there, what were the main things you were  looking for in a school? iii. What did you study? iv. Do the skills from your studies help you in your job? 1. If relevant: How specifically do they help your work? 2. If irrelevant: What about the college experience taught you the  most about yourself or helps you still today? Transition: Now that we have some basis as to some of your influences, let us  examine how you achieved your current position b. Professional Background i. After school where did you work? 1. If no work: Why did you not work, reflect on those circumstances  looking back now ii. Tell me about your career path, how did you end up working where you  do? (meant to broad question, longer answer) 1. If worked at same place for a long time: what about Loyola has  kept you so loyal 2. Of all the places that you have worked at, which did you enjoy? Or not enjoy and how did this affect your current career choice? Transition: I’d now like to look at your current job now that we know how and  why you got there. c. Job overview i. From my research it appears that your department manages facilities,  bookstores, dining services, sustainability, and events, is this an accurate  picture? 1. If yes: What do you mostly work with or is your job more general? 2. If no: How would you describe the scope of your department? ii. What are the responsibilities of your job? iii. What kind of problems are you required to solve daily? 1. What are these problems rooted in? iv. What is the most exciting thing that you are currently working on in your  department? Transition: Now that we know a more about your job, I want to figure out the role communication plays in your work. d. Communication in Job i. Do you think that working in such a large environment (a university)  makes it substantially harder to communicate effectively? 1. If so: what is being done to bridge this gap? 2. If not: how is an organization this big so efficient? ii. What are the large problems with communication in your job, for example is it getting a message across or a lack of trust in other parties, or  something else entirely? 1. If possible what is an example situation where this comes up, or  even some hypothetical? iii. Which party is most difficult to communicate with, students, parents,  professors, staff, inner department, other departments, superiors, or other? 1. Why is this party the most difficult to communicate with 2. Which is the easiest to communicate with and why? 3. Of these other than your own department who do you interact with  the most, and the least? iv. What skills are essentials to hold your position? Transition: All of these insights have been exceptionally interesting but before we go…. III. Conclusion a. Closing Questions i. What would you say to anyone who is interested in working at a large  university, whether it be administrative or not? ii. Anything else you want to mention before we are out of time? b. Ending i. Again, thank you for taking time out of your day lend some insights to  your career, and it was a pleasure learning more about how universities are managed. Good bye and have a nice rest of your day
