•  Quite a difference between what we know and what is
actually happening in the outside world  •  When you smell, chemicals are not actually hitting your  brain it is touching cells in your nose and is then sent to
different areas in the brain
•  2 ways to move from sensation to perception: Bottom-up  Processing and Top-Down Processing  •  Brain has essence memorized
•  Has different sensations memorized
•  Pure Processing-Brain has to figure out new things!
•  Friend from foreign country lets you try new piece of
fruit. Your brain might assume it is an apple if you’re not
careful. You brain will fill in the gaps.
•  We can take in different sensations
•  Different types of input for each sense
•  Different pathways to brain for each sense
•  How much of a stimulus does there need to be before our
brain decides there is something there?  •  Ironclad-the evidence is not clear
