Consciousness notes  Consciousness is the awareness of things  Attention: capacity to focus your awareness  Multitasking: can inhibit awareness  Sleep o Five stages  Light sleep- slower breathing and relaxing muscles  Body temperature drops and brain activity speeds up  Delta waves begin  Deep sleep occurs (pure delta waves)  REM sleep (rapid eye movement) dreams occur, facilitates brain development and memory processing o Sleep helps the brain recover and store information o Sleep deprivation can cause negative consequences  Dreams o Freud says that dreams are unconscious desires o Activation- during REM the brain is fully processing but the body cannot move, so dreams occur o Neurocognitive model: dreams can only reflect things we already think about or have seen  Sleep disorders o Insomnia: the inability to fall/ stay asleep o Sleep apnea: lack of proper breathing while sleeping o Narcolepsy: daytime sleeping / can’t control the ability to stay awake o Parasomnia : includes night terrors, sleepwalking, sleep eating, sleep sex  Drugs: chemical that affects the brain and behavior o Bodies can become addicted or even resistant to drugs o Addictions can lead to withdrawals whenever the drug is taken away o Five types  Hallucinogens = serotonin receptors  Common drugs are LSD and PCP and they cause the inability to control thoughts /cannabis (marijuana)can be useful for pain relief from cancer or reduce pressure from glaucoma  Both psychologically addictive  Opiates- pain relief  Includes morphine, heroine, codeine, OxyContin, Vicodin, percodin, demerol,  Also include endorphins produces by the body  Depressants reduce CNS  These include Barbiturates, benzodiazepines, “roofies”, and alcohol  Stimulants increase CNS  Includes amphetamines, methamphetamines, MDMA and cocaine, nicotine, caffeine
