Spanish Grammar Unit 3 Study Guide Units 7 – 9 The Subjunctive The Hippy Truth About NonExistence If you are sure that something exists, you use the indicative… When we don’t specify, or are not sure, if a certain person, place, or thing exists, the subjunctive is applied… Busco una camiseta que lleva una foto de Elvis. Lleva = indicative because I know they have the Tshirt Busco una camiseta que lleve una foto de Elvis Lleve = subjunctive because I’m not sure they have one Busco una persona que sea responsible I’m looking for a person who is responsible… (but I don’t have anyone in mind, hence subjunctive) Cualquier cosa que compres, les va a gustar. Whatever you buy they’re going to like the gift. (…it still hasn’t been decided yet, so… subjunctive!) Pararemos donde podamos We’ll stop where we can …(not sure where yet, so subjunctive!) Another way we can identify the use of the subjunctive is through trigger words. Here is an acronym to remember some important Spanish trigger words. W – want/wish/desire E emotion I – Impersonal Expression R – Request/Recommendation D – Doubt/Denial O – ojalá
