3) Evil demon Scenario: 

  • It’s hard to “live” with doubt. So, I will imagine there is an evil demon, who is making me systematically declared (Section G). This demon has employed his utmost power and cunning in deceiving me about everything which I formerly believed.

  • doubt come from science and what we were actually perceiving

 Second Mediation

  1. If there is an evil demon who is deceiving me, then I exist (so long as he is deceiving me)
  1. There is one thing you cannot doubt; that is that you exist while wondering all of these scenarios
  1. So long as I can ask ‘Do I exist?’, I must exist
  1. Doubt requires a doubter, someone who exist so long as the doubt does
  2. ‘I think, therefore I am’

  • He does not demonstrate that he exists, all-in first-person narrative
  • In order to wonder if you existed, you have to be in existence

  1. God’s existence, benevolence: thus, we can be confident that we are not systematically deceived
  2. There is a “real distinction” between the mind and the body (c.f. second + six mediation) mind and body are two different things.

Note: Descartes makes a break between Catholic and philosophical beliefs.

  • Most Catholics would have the same mind state as Descartes
  • It helps believe in the after life

i.        Conceptual conflict between afterlife and our understanding of physical universe and its laws. (if I am just my body, this looks to be trouble for the afterlife)

  • We all have beliefs, try to see things that we know to be true, follow those beliefs
  • Eventually we have to give our beliefs up if we want to follow consistent

  • Thinks Descartes made a mistake

-           Cartesian Dualism

-           Something that makes it difficult not to side with Cartesian

 

-       What is Descartes position? Heed to make a clear statement of dualist position.

a)        A person as a subject of discourse collects predicts (tall, smart, clumsy). The ordinary way of talking about people tends to obscure what is really true about people

b)        We distinguish between sorts of predicts either 1) refer to the state of conscious   2) refer to body  3) refer to both at once

c)        The history of the human being is not the history of the one two-sided thing, but two one sided things.

i.         Dualist there is mind and body: the predicts that apply to one, do not apply to the other (two-sided thing)

ii.        But if this is true, we should be able to alter the manner in which we talk about people in a way that classifies whether we are talking about their body or their mind, but until we do this, our speech is liable to confusion
