Review From Lecture 1:

Rules of the Game

• Social problems are different from economic problems

Declines in populations are not doing very well because they don't  have enough workers

• H1D Visa - worker visa

○ Allows the American industries to be competitive

○ STEM industry individuals are most common to come in • Immigrants are from Asia and Eastern Europe

○ Economic migrants - "run after a food source"

▪ Ex. Cave men

▪ Immigrants are moving to make more money and supply  food  for their family

How does immigration affect the population?

Higher developed countries (Western European countries) don't  migrate to the US because there are more perks in their home  country

○ Non Hispanic whites are decreasing

• Change the public policies and we will get a different outcome

Fertility

• US Growth rate 2.1 (aka. Stagnant)

• Fertility is less than 2.1

○ Immigration is the only  thing keeping our population  from decline If you want to learn more check out What is the language of the sephardi?

Impacted by: culture, health, education*, public policies pertaining  to children

□ Children are seen as a liability

□ Women's education

Texas vs. US

Population percent change of Texas is greater than 2x the US percent  change

□ Women's education

Texas vs. US

Population percent change of Texas is greater than 2x the US percent  change

• Texas percent is below the US percent of graduates from high school • Bachelor's Degree or Higher

People are immigrating into Texas with a degree which increases  the percent

▪ 1 in 4 people have a degree in Texas

• Median household  income

○ Median household  income of Asian Americans is the  typically  highest, because multiple generations of families will live in one  house

• Per capita income is divided by people in the household • Glass Ceiling Effect - minority groups are disadvantaged in income • Percent living in poverty: Texas> US

○ Mostly women with children that are impoverished  ○ Poverty is directly related to education We also discuss several other topics like What are the constitutional foundations of the presidential leadership in fp making?

States with higher educational levels will have lower poverty  levels

• Incarceration rate: US is #1 in the world, Texas #4 in the nation ○ Also related to education

▪ Those who are more educated less likely to be in jail ○ Deterrents

▪ Do the crime do the time

▪ Longer sentences are given to  those who "deserve it"  ○ Privatized prison systems

Judges are bribed to give longer sentences  to keep prisons  running

▪ Private investors make more money this way

• Number of prisoners, violent crime rate and incarceration rate are high • Unemployment

Data Accuracy
