What is a childbirth assistant called?



Chapter 4  

Stages of Birth

∙ 1st stage: dilation and effacement of cervix; fully dilated at 10 cm, 8-12 hours for first baby and 7 hours for second

∙ 2nd stage: actual birth; birth of baby lasts about 50 minutes ∙ 3rd stage: afterbirth (right after baby’s birth), lasts 3-10 minutes

Childbirth Setting and Attendants

∙ midwife: U.S. certified nurses  

∙ doula: someone who provides support before, during, and after the  baby has been born

Medications and Childbirth

∙ anaogesic: relieves pain

∙ oxytocin: triggers uterine muscles to contract, naturally produced  through pituitary gland

∙ piticon: similar to oxytocin but is synthetic
