Description
Linguistics 20 HOMEWORK #1 Winter 2017 Due by 1:50pm Wed Jan 18
A Do the following problems from pp. 55–57 of the text:
3 parts i)–p) and 8. Ignore the given instructions, just transcribe the words into IPA.
10. Ignore the instruction about aspiration, just transcribe the words into IPA.
• FYI, tog in (a) rhymes with fog (it’s a verb that means ‘to dress up’ and a noun that means ‘cloak’, but most native speakers have never heard of it so I have no idea why it’s in this exercise)
You can practice transcription using any of Practice 2.15–2.19 from the Study Guide pp. 29–31. In checking your answers, note that more than one pronunciation is sometimes possible even when the book doesn’t say so; and for now, just ignore the symbol [h].
General note on transcription
Native English speakers: please transcribe your own pronunciation.
Non-native speakers: you are encouraged to have a native speaker pronounce words for you, but if this isn’t possible you may use www.merriam-webster.com to play audio recordings of the words and transcribe what you hear there. (This site’s transcriptions are NOT in IPA, so looking at them will only confuse you—you should ignore them.)
We also discuss several other topics like Why are electric field lines important?
B Do the two problems on the next page.
1
B 1. Each of the following is a transcription of an ordinary word in a standard North American dialect. Write the word (in standard spelling) corresponding to each transcription. (Hint: Sound them out!) You can practice for this by doing Practice 2.20 from the Study Guide pg. 31—just ignore the [h] symbol for now. We also discuss several other topics like What is the significance of race and ethnicity in latin america?
