background image o National non-profit dedicated to the understanding and  prevention of  suicide Of all the people who have suicidal thoughts, what percentage go on to die by suicide? <5 % is correct, it is a relatively normal thought Worldwide… ~1, 000, 000 lives are lost to suicide worldwide each year More deaths are due to suicide than accidents, war, and
homicide combined
~One death every 40 seconds So, as you have seen. Suicide attempts and death by suicide
are fairly rare. However, suicide still takes the lives of many
individuals each year.
Worldwide, approximately 1 million individuals die by suicide
each year.
There are more deaths due to suicide than accidents, wars,
and homicide combined.
This equates to about 1 death by suicide every 40 seconds (in
the past fifteen minutes approximately 22 people have died
by suicide).
In the United States… 33,000 deaths due to suicide annually 10 th  leading cause of death across age groups 3 rd  leading cause of death among 15-24 year olds ~ 90 Americans die by suicide each day Ratio of Suicide Attempts by Gender
background image Women are three times more likely to commit suicide than
men
Ratio of Suicide Deaths by Gender Men are four times more likely to die by suicide than women o Why such large gender difference??  WHY are women  more likely to attempt but men more likely to die by
suicide??
MEANS chosen to attempt European Americans have highest rates…Native Americans are  close behind (maybe due to poverty, substance use, discrimination,
lack of education, access to guns)
In the U.S. suicide has historically been a “white” problem This has changed somewhat recently, mostly owing to an
increase in African-American men
o Rate is now over 10 per 100,000; used to be under 5 per 100,000 o For African-American women, rate is around 2 per  100,000 and has not changed much over time  Risk Factors Mental illness (esp comorbidity): o Over 90% of people who die by suicide have a mental  disorder Anhedonia Hopelessness Suicidal ideation Impulsivity (trait)
